Overview

The successful applicant will be able to work with laboratory equipment and processes across the Blood Sciences disciplines (Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Central Pathology Reception) whilst being primarily based within Central Reception. The vacancy is primarily based at Epsom Hospital, with potential future changes to other SWLP laboratories. The role is a pan pathology position offering the opportunity to support out of hours Blood Sciences testing and to handle associated duties in Pathology specimen reception.


Responsibilities

* Primarily work within Central Reception handling the receipt, labelling and booking in of multi-discipline samples.
* Prepare samples for analysis and input patient data.
* Deal with enquiries within Pathology specimen reception.
* Support the Trust’s out of hours Blood Sciences testing after suitable training.
* Organise own work tasks within a defined area under supervision, and progress to working across SWLP laboratories as required.
* Adhere to standard operational policies and maintain documentation to SWL Pathology standards (including electronic records).
* Contribute to a culture of quality and support quality initiatives to maintain laboratory accreditation.
* Work a 24/7 rotation after training, including early, late and night shifts; weekend and bank holiday duties may be required with enhanced pay where applicable.
* Be prepared to work at any of the Trust sites as training and service requirements dictate.


Qualifications and expectations

* Proven experience of working in a diagnostic pathology department is advantageous; full training will be provided.
* Continuous professional development (CPD) will be encouraged.
* This is not a trainee Biomedical Scientist post and we are unable to support IBMS pre-registration portfolios.
* Demonstrate ability to understand and perform work in accordance with standard operational policies using basic theoretical knowledge.
* Be able to solve basic problems within the work area and refer unresolved issues to a more senior member of staff.
* Commit to working in a designated area under supervision and organising own work tasks as appropriate.

Epsom and St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust forms part of the South West London Pathology partnership, delivering a single, integrated pathology service across South West London and beyond. The department supports a range of medical specialities and services across two sites, and has joined the SWLP partnership with St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
