Job overview

The advertised post is for a full-time Locum Consultant in the Department of Immunology at the Bart's Health NHS Trust for a minimum of 6 months in the first instance with a scope of a permanent position. The post provides the opportunity to work in one of the largest Immunology departments in the country.

Barts Health NHS Trust is one of Britain's leading healthcare providers and of the largest Trusts in the NHS. The trust provides a wide range of specialist tertiary services, including Clinical Immunology. The Clinical Immunology service is an accredited centre for primary immunodeficiency (QPIDS), one of the largest primary immunodeficiency centres in the country and the largest Hereditary Angioedema centre. The diagnostic Immunology laboratory is UKAS ISO15189-accredited and is a specialist laboratory within a newly formed pathology partnership. We have an outstanding training record for medical trainees as well as biomedical and clinical scientists and a very active research team.

The successful candidate will be required to adhere to the Trust's policy on Maintaining Medical Excellence and to be committed to maintaining their standard of performance by keeping their knowledge and skills up to date.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will have a shared responsibility for clinical and laboratory work in keeping with the job plan of the post.

weekly Adult Immunology Clinic

support the day case unit and participate in the assessment and management of a wide range of patients with immunological diseases

lead consultant for subspecialty clinic and associated portfolio of clinical trials if applicable

support the home care programmes and provide advice over the telephone

participate in the laboratory rota for clinical authorisation and commenting and interpretation of laboratory results

provide ward consultation and advice to other specialties

participate in the on-call rota (currently 1:3, category B) and provide clinical and laboratory cover for colleagues annual, study leave and professional leave (mutual)

support leadership, development, and organisation of the services in their charge in line with the Directorate's and the Trust's objectives, Pathfinder Clinical Strategy, and the NHS Plan, including the promotion of team and multidisciplinary working

ensure that administrative duties associated with patient care are undertaken

ensure that serious untoward incidents, incidents and near misses are appropriately reported into the Trust's risk management systems

handle patient and user complaints as requested and work with the Trust's complaints department in ensuring timely responses for complainants

Qualifications

Essential criteria

* MBBS/MB ChB or equivalent
* MRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification.
* FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification.
* Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
* Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and keeps up to date with medical advances
Desirable criteria
* Academic degree in Immunology - MSc/MD/PhD
Experience

Essential criteria
* Thorough and broad training and experience in Immunology.
* Ability to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
* Thorough understanding of the principles of medical audit.
* Undertaken audit projects.
* Experience of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching or training.
* Commitment in participating and understanding of the management process, and to demonstrating clinical leadership.
Desirable criteria
* Experience of undergraduate and/or postgraduate exam preparation.
* Interest in research with peer reviewed publications.
* Participation in service improvement projects.
* Attendance in a "training the trainers" or equivalent course Management training course
Knowledge

Essential criteria
* Knowledge and experience of Immunology.
* Knowledge of evidence-based practice.
* Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance.
Skills

Essential criteria
* Broad range of IT skills
* Professional attitude towards work, reliability, good attendance record and tidy personal appearance.
* Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in pathology and support staff.
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
Desirable criteria
* Advanced skills IT training courses

* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries.
