Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner - Band 5
The post-holder will be employed by the Trust as an Apprentice in Operating Department Practice and undertake degree level study, demonstrating the Apprentice standard as set by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IFA) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards of proficiency. Upon completion of the degree level study, the apprentice will be eligible to apply to the HCPC and work under the protected title of Operating Department Practitioner (ODP). The apprenticeship will encompass teaching blocks at University and clinical placements (across the ULHT sites), the work-based learning will encompass anaesthetics, intra-operative and the post anaesthetic phases of care. The university will be selected and commissioned by the Trust.
Main duties of the job
* Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate own workload organising equipment and resources to meet the service demands.
* Liase with members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Prepare and organise clinical work areas, receive patients and ensure own practice is current and evidence based.
* Act as a patient advocate respecting autonomy and confidentiality.
* Continue professional development throughout their study at University.
* Comply with IPC code ensuring all practice supports infection prevention.
* In conjunction with senior staff, will participate in the setting, monitoring and evaluation of standards of care for patients.
* Demonstrate an understanding of clinical governance through everyday practice.
* To undertake any other appropriate additional duties, as required by the needs of the service.
Job responsibilities
* To commit to their personal learning and development includes completion of the degree apprenticeship programme and their appraisal and supervision.
* Have a responsibility for use of resources, maintain stock levels within own specialist areas.
* Act at all times within relevant code of conduct.

Qualifications
* Evidence of GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent alternative qualification in Mathematics, English Language or literature.
* To meet university degree course eligibility criteria as agreed between the University and Trust.
Previous Experience
* Experience of working in a Clinical Environment
* Experience of prioritising own time and working to deadlines.
* Experience of using good customer relations and effective communication skills including face to face.
* Experience as a health care support worker or equivalent in hospital.
* A clear understanding and appreciation of Operating Department Practice and its related values.
* Ability to work with people regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability.
* Ability to work in accordance with anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practices.
* Well-developed written and verbal communication skills including sound listening skills.
* IT skills - Digitally literate
* Good organisational skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Ability to use own initiative whilst recognising when to seek further assistance.
* Ability to reflect on own experience and use this in own development.

£32,073 to £39,043 a year. Year 1 65% Top band 5 as per annex 21 AFC, Year 2 70%, Year 3 75%
