Mechanical Engineer – Weekend Shift
FMCG Manufacturing | Newcastle upon Tyne
Scantec Recruitment is working in partnership with a leading FMCG manufacturing business near Newcastle to recruit a Mechanically Biased Maintenance Engineer for their weekend engineering team.
Production does not run at weekends, so this role is heavily focused on planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and project work. You’ll be part of a small, close-knit engineering team, supporting the site through scheduled maintenance, improvements and CAPEX activity.
The role is predominantly mechanical, with some basic electrical fault-finding and maintenance required.
Shift Pattern
Regular weekend work12-hour day shifts – Saturday & SundayPlus one additional 12-hour day shift during the week

You’ll be responsible for providing engineering and technical support across production lines and ancillary equipment, ensuring all maintenance activities are carried out safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
Identify and implement line and process improvementsEnsure production lines are safe to operatePlan and carry out preventative maintenance activitiesSupport CAPEX projects from planning through to implementationContribute to the training and development of line staff and apprenticesSet up, adjust and run production lines when requiredMonitor line efficiency and downtime, contributing to action plans for improvementCarry out mechanical fault finding, repair and replacementCarry out fabrication work (Welding, Milling and Turning)Ensure quality controls are followed, with ongoing review of spoilage, isolations and customer complaintsSupport the implementation of WCP standardsComplete daily maintenance tasks including lubrication, cleaning and housekeepingMaintain a safe, tidy working environment at all timesAbout You
Experienced Mechanical Engineer from a fast-paced manufacturing environmentTypically 3–5 years’ experience in a similar roleStrong mechanical backgroundHolds relevant Mechanical engineering qualification such as NVQ Level 3, HNC or HNDComfortable working independently and as part of a small teamStrong safety awareness and attention to detail
