Overview
Rail Fire Engineer role at WSP in the UK & Ireland. The position involves developing fire safety design for rail and road infrastructure from concept through construction and commissioning, carrying out fire risk assessments and providing solutions for retrofits in existing and challenging infrastructures.
Your role and responsibilities
* Develop fire safety design for rail and road infrastructure from concept through construction, assurance and commissioning.
* Carry out fire risk assessments to ensure compliance with relevant fire safety codes.
* Design fire safety systems including fire detection and alarm, fire suppression, and facilities for firefighter intervention (hydrant designs).
* Develop fire strategies from concept to construction and assist with static evacuation analysis for surface stations, deep underground stations and tunnel environments.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate fire safety into rail and road infrastructure projects.
* Assist with retrofitting existing infrastructure to meet fire safety and performance requirements.
* Apply knowledge of heat transfer, fluid dynamics and fire performance of materials to design decisions.
* Share knowledge and learn from colleagues; maintain awareness of interdisciplinary design through all design stages.
* Possess professional qualifications (Chartered Engineer preferred) and the ability to deliver tasks within time and budget.
Qualifications and experience
* Excellent technical knowledge in Fire Engineering or another applicable engineering discipline (e.g., mechanical, chemical, or structural fire engineering).
* Experience with fire safety design processes and planning; use of relevant Technical Guidance and Standards.
* Experience in developing fire strategies from concept to construction.
* Experience with static evacuation analysis for surface and underground stations and tunnel environments.
* Experience with Fire Risk Assessments for compliance with fire safety codes.
* Experience with fire safety systems design (fire detection and alarm, fire suppression, hydrants).
* Willingness to learn, knowledge sharing, and ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams.
* Chartered membership or equivalent professional qualification preferred.
* Able to take briefs from project leads and deliver tasks within schedule and budget.
