Overview:
Cartmel Racecourse, one of the UK's most unique and picturesque racecourses, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Assistant Head Groundsman to support the Head Groundsman in maintaining and preparing the racecourse and associated grounds to the highest possible standards. This is a hands-on role requiring flexibility, attention to detail, and a passion for turf management in a sporting environment.
Key Responsibilities:
· Assist in the preparation and maintenance of the racing surface, including mowing, aeration, fertilising, watering, and repair of damaged turf.
· Help prepare the course for race days, including track marking, fence/rail positioning, and installation of running rail, signage, and temporary infrastructure.
· Carry out day-to-day maintenance of the grounds, including public areas.
· Operate and maintain a wide range of grounds machinery and tools in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
· Deputise for the Head Groundsman during periods of absence, leading the grounds team and liaising with race officials as required.
· Assist with irrigation systems and drainage management to ensure optimum track conditions.
· Ensure all equipment is kept in good working order, undertaking routine maintenance and coordinating repairs when necessary.
· Contribute to the development and implementation of seasonal turf care programs.
· Assist in maintaining accurate records relating to grounds maintenance, weather conditions, machinery use, and turf treatment.
· Provide support for non-raceday events held at the racecourse, including setup and take-down as required.
Requirements:
Essential:
· Full UK driving licence.
· Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, public holidays, and race days.
· Good communication skills and a proactive, team-oriented approach.
· Proficient in the safe use of groundskeeping machinery and tools.
Desirable:
· NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Sports Turf Management (or equivalent).
· Knowledge of turf care techniques including seeding, aeration, and irrigation.
· Previous experience in turf management, preferably in a sporting or equestrian environment.
· Experience in racecourse or equestrian surface preparation.
· Basic mechanical skills for machinery maintenance.
· Spraying PA6
Working Hours:
· 40 hours per week
· Additional hours required during race meetings and special events, with time off in lieu
