Our largest programme, 21st Century Maintenance, impacts Network Rail’s entire national Maintenance organisation. Maintenance is responsible for the day-to-day upkeep of the network; it supports the operations and project teams by making sure every part of the infrastructure – such as signals and power supplies, or assets such as track and bridges – is maintained and in good working order. There are over 20,000 Maintenance staff, spread across 38 Delivery Units around the network.
The objective of the 21st Century Maintenance programme is to develop Maintenance Delivery Units (MDUs) that are excelling in delivering the right work at the right time, with the right people and skills, and with the best facilities, where the full toolkit of technological solutions, leadership training, and optimal organisational structures can be deployed. MDUs will drive best practice, enabling Routes to become intelligent clients, shaping national programmes, and supporting services of the future.

As Project Manager, you’ll be responsible for the delivery of national projects across the 21st Century Maintenance programme. This includes setting them up for success by agreeing remits, developing project plans, managing communication and stakeholder engagement, resource management, providing oversight of progress and, most importantly, enabling the deployment of solutions. Dependent on the scale of the projects, you may be managing several projects at any one time.
A key part of our approach to business change is that we partner with those that are closest to the work. Therefore, given that the programme will impact stakeholders nationally, some projects will require you to travel to Network Rail sites around the country when appropriate. This requires flexibility with travel and potentially some overnight stays.
