The Vacancy
Binnies an RSK Group company is recruiting Graduate Hydraulic Consultant to join our industry-respected Flood, Coastal and Environment team nominally in Chester, Bradford-on-Avon, Swansea, Redhill or Glasgow but with remote working opportunities.
The successful candidate will help deliver our client's flood and coastal erosion risk management programme; Reservoirs Act compliance works; flood mapping updates; and fish passage improvements and river restoration work. They will develop and work with models of varying scales (local, catchment and national) and flood risk sources (fluvial, coastal and surface water).
You should be driven to develop and improve your technical skills and motivated to gain a professional qualification within a few years with a Professional Organisation such as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. In return we will enrol you in our Graduate Training Scheme and give you access to senior mentors and role models in technical specialisms, who will support you to become Chartered as your career develops. Roles and Responsibilities:
* Undertake hydrological analysis for model inputs
* Prepare scopes for topographic and channel surveys
* Develop hydraulic models from survey and check and review third party models
* Model validation against gauged data
* Appraisal of flood risk management solutions and residual risk
* Author clear, concise and technically accurate modelling reports
* Author Flood Risk Assessments / Flood Consequence Assessments to support planning applications
* Communicate effectively as part of a distributed and multi-disciplinary team and be able to work and manage time and resources effectively
* Show a desire to grow with, and progress within the company and wider industry and achieve a professional qualification (e.g. CIWEM)
Required Qualifications:
* Degree (2:1 or above) in geography, engineering, environmental science or other relevant subject (other relevant technical qualification can be considered)
* Preferably a relevant post graduate qualification
* Hold a valid UK driving licence for site visits
Required Awareness and Knowledge:
* Knowledge and understanding of basic hydrological and hydraulic principles and their practical application
* Awareness of how modelling software is used (eg. Flood Modeller (FM), TUFLOW/ESTRY and HEC-RAS)
* Awareness of hydrological assessment using rainfall-runoff (e.g. ReFH2) and statistical methods
* Knowledge and understanding of GIS software, preferably ArcGIS or QGIS
* Awareness of the National Planning Policy Framework and Planning Policy Wales in relation to assessing and managing flood risk
* Knowledge of programming/macro writing e.g. python scripts
