The Mobile Plant Fitter will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the company's mobile plant and materials handling equipment. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all vehicles on site through preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, and timely rectification. The role will also contribute to developing and managing a preventive maintenance regime and a critical spare parts list to minimise downtime.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out preventative maintenance schedules across the full fleet of mobile plant and vehicles, including:
* STILL Forklift Trucks
* Hangcha Forklift Trucks
* 2x JCB Telehandlers
* 1x Komatsu 360 Excavator
* 1x Atlas Loading Shovel
* 2x Mobile Platforms
* Perform diagnosis and rectification of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults on mobile plant equipment.
* Maintain accurate records of all work undertaken, inspections completed, and parts used.
* Complete and document daily checks on all vehicles to ensure operational safety and compliance.
* Introduce, manage, and maintain a critical spare parts list for mobile plant, ensuring key spares are readily available.
* Liaise with external suppliers, service providers, and manufacturers as required.
* Respond promptly to unplanned breakdowns, minimising equipment downtime.
* Ensure all work is completed in line with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
* Support continuous improvement initiatives to optimise plant reliability and efficiency.
* Provide technical input and recommendations on equipment condition, replacement, and upgrades.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
* Time-served mechanic/engineer with relevant qualifications (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering).
* Demonstrated experience in maintenance and repair of forklift trucks, telehandlers, excavators, or other heavy plant equipment.
* Strong diagnostic skills (mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems).
* Experience with preventative maintenance systems and processes.
* Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and parts lists.
* Strong awareness of health & safety regulations relating to plant equipment.
* Forklift or mobile plant operator's licence
Desirable:
* Previous experience working with brands listed (STILL, Hangcha, JCB, Komatsu, Atlas).
* Knowledge of LOLER, PUWER, and other applicable legislation.
* Forklift or mobile plant operator's licence (advantageous).
* Basic IT literacy (for maintenance records and spare parts management).
