Job summary

A vacancy has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist within Clinical Biochemistry. Our busy department operates over two sites, and provides a 24/7 service to our patients and service users.

The department is an accredited training laboratory and provides opportunities for CPD and personal development.

The automated laboratory is equipped with Roche analysers, and the specialist protein section utilises Sebia analysers.

Full participation in the 24/7 shift rota will be required after appropriate training.

Consideration will also be given to exceptional candidates who can demonstrate that they are able to achieve HCPC registration within 6 months of commencement.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with significant post-registration experience gained within Clinical Biochemistry. They will contribute to the provision of a continuous and comprehensive Clinical Biochemistry service. This will involve performing routine and specialist procedures and investigations to support healthcare professionals in the effective diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and discharge of patients. They will ensure the analytical and technical validity of investigations. They will liaise with medical, scientific and administration staff within the department, hospital and community, and with service users, including patients, when required.

Job responsibilities

To contribute to the provision of a rapid, reliable and efficient analytical service. This requires the post holder to be skilled in the use of a wide variety of techniques and operation of complex equipment within the department.

To be aware of, and work within, the agreed policies and guidance, and adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of Wirral University Teaching Hospitals.

To contribute to the implementation of new services and to the process of review and development of current service provision.Prepare and process biological specimens such as blood, urine, faeces and other body fluids in accordance with agreed protocols and Standard Operating Procedures.

Prioritise, prepare and post specimens for Referred Out Testing (send aways), ensuring conformity to latest postal regulations for transport of biological specimens. Report results provided by other laboratories.

To apply specialised knowledge and skills in key areas where appropriate.

To assume enhanced responsibility when required and in the absence of supervisory or other Senior staff.

To attend internal and external training courses as directed, including Wirral University Teaching Hospital mandatory training sessions.

To assist in the mentoring, supervision and instruction of Trainee and less experienced Biomedical Scientists, Support staff and visitors to the department, including completion of training and competence documents as appropriate.

To act as the supervisor for Support Staff in the absence of senior staff.To utilise resources in a cost-effective manner by careful stock control, advising supervisory staff of the need to replenish stocks.

To contribute to the improvement of service provision by participating in the validation and verification of new assays / methods, acceptance testing, and participating in the development of new processes and working practices when required.To contribute to the maintenance of external accreditation e.g. UKAS accreditation, by actively participating in the Quality Management System of the department including, but not limited to, participation in audit, reporting of incidents complaints and compliments, reviewing and following SOPs, and completion of training and competency assessments.To be aware of the responsibilities and duties of other staff within Clinical Biochemistry, Blood Sciences, and Wirral University Teaching Hospital enabling enquiries and requests for information to be passed to the most appropriate person first time.To be familiar with, and adhere to all Trust and Directorate Health and Safety Policies, and to be aware of hazards, risk assessments and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) evaluations before starting all procedures.To complete Risk Assessments where appropriate.To participate in staff appraisal and wellbeing conversations according to Trust Policy.Knowledge and adherence to Data Protection, Caldicott, Freedom of Information Act, Clinical Governance and any other relevant policy or legislation required for Healthcare workers in England.
