Description Starting salary: £43,227 Contract type: Permanent Grade: 4 Location: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH (with hybrid working) Working Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week Interviews: To be held in person on Week Commencing 18 May 2026 This is a construction technical support role, helping conserve Scotland’s cultural built heritage. Based on a sound understanding of traditional building and conservation, and working closely with the District Architect, you will produce drawings and specifications and be involved in repair and project work delivery from inception to completion, together with estate management duties. The role is office-based in Edinburgh, with the option of home working, and covers Historic Environment Scotland Properties in Care – monuments and listed buildings – together with anciliary facilities, primarily in the South West of Scotland. Produce finished drawings using survey software. Produce designs and details for repairs and fabric replacement using traditional building materials, from site surveys, scale and full-size drawings and templates as required by the District Architect. In conjunction with District Architect, undertake site assessment surveys of Properties in Care and compile findings as part of the Condition Monitoring System. Assist in producing feasibility studies, outline proposals and scheme designs in accordance with the District Architect’s instructions. Research appropriate materials and constructional methods suitable for the repair and maintenance of historic buildings and structures and discuss matters of detail with technical representatives as required. Implement Health & Safety actions and documentation under the requirements of the CDM Regulations 2015. Prepare construction drawings using computer aided draughting (currently utilising AutoCAD 2024), write specifications and schedules for the execution of specific projects by Contract or Historic Environment Scotland direct labour Monument Conservation Unit. Traditional draughting methods may be required on occasions. Prepare 3D computer generated models and images as appropriate to explain scheme proposals. Co-ordinate with allied disciplines e.g. other Historic Environment Scotland groups, historians, archaeologists, mechanical and electrical engineers, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, health and safety officers, public bodies (e.g. local authority, building control, planning, SEPA) at all stages of the work. Liaise with visitor services monument management staff, external contractors and direct labour Monument Conservation Units, and attend meetings as required. Generally assist District Architects in the administration, monitoring, recording and reporting of works. Prepare presentations involving sketches, images and graphic using bespoke software for exhibition and display purposes. Undertake approved training and development activities as per organisation requirements and in support of continuing professional development. Carry out other relevant duties as directed by line management. Note: survey and other works involvement may entail working at height or in confined spaces and at remote sites. Travel, extended working days, overnight stays and periods away from home from time to time at all times of the year will be necessary. Although the role primarily relates to sites in South West Scotland, flexibility to make visits to sites across the wider South Region of Scotland will be expected together with occasional visits to our other regions in central and northern of Scotland. Essential: Experience and competence in the use of AutoCAD (preferably 2024). An understanding of traditional Scottish building construction techniques. A working knowledge of modern building construction practices and detailing. Experience in the use of Microsoft Office software; including Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Teams and Word. Able to demonstrate experience of production of Scheme Design and Construction Drawings and Specifications. Able to demonstrate knowledge of Building Standards and Planning process. Able to demonstrate suitable depth of knowledge in detailing, specification and compilation of works packages. Able to work at heights and be comfortable in confined spaces. Able to work for periods away from home. Willing to travel by commercial aircraft, ferry or small boat. A full UK Driving Licence. SCQF Level 7 qualification in Architectural / Building Technology.
