The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Principal Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. This is a hybrid position with shared office space in Belfast, and we welcome applications from Senior Engineers across Northern Ireland.
Our 130-strong Belfast Design Hub delivers a range of local, national and international projects for clients including Department for Infrastructure Roads, Translink, National Highways, Transport Scotland and Network Rail. Our multidisciplinary team encompasses Highway Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, as well as being the BIM Centre of Excellence for Amey. This ecosystem offers clients a one-stop shop and provides staff with opportunities to grow and develop in a knowledge-rich environment, with specialists who are eager to assist and mentor their development.
The role
Responsibilities
* Act as a technical team leader, providing advice, guidance and supervision to technical teams, operational managers, clients and suppliers
* Lead the preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria
* Take responsibility for the commercial success of projects within the portfolio, controlling budgets and managing costs associated with deliverables
* Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level and higher, including presenting proposals, attending progress meetings and responding to queries
* Significantly contribute to and lead the preparation of bids and the general work-winning function, including preparation of technical and commercial offers
* Drive effective health and safety practices within the team
What You Will Bring To Us
* High level experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, likely gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent
* Ability to produce and lead technically sound engineering solutions, compliant with relevant standards and client requirements
* Experience managing health, safety and welfare tasks, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and CDM Regulations
* Capability to act as engineering lead for a project when required (e.g., Contractor’s Engineering Manager for Network Rail schemes)
* Knowledge of design and specification processes with ability to manage others; acts as Design Team Lead for minor and major projects
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools; ability to check work and approve new tools
* Strong CDM and risk assessment understanding; capable of acting as Principal Designer for all projects
* Supervisory and people-management skills across multidisciplinary teams
* Incorporated or Chartered status or equivalent professional licence
