JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal
Responsibilities
1. Exercise of general professional duties: A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including working under the reasonable direction of the principal or under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal when employed by a board on terms under which they are not assigned to any one school.
2. Exercise of particular duties: Perform, in accordance with directions reasonably given by the principal, such particular duties as may be assigned. For teachers referred to in 1(b), perform duties as directed by the board or the principal of any school where they may be required to work.
3. Planning: Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work; assessing and reporting on development, progress and attainment.
4. General: Promote the general progress and well-being of pupils; provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters and future careers; make records and reports on pupil needs; communicate with parents; liaise with others outside the school as approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors; participate in meetings.
5. Assessment/ Reporting: Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils.
6. Staff Development/Professional Development: Participate in staff development and performance review; review teaching methods and programmes; participate in further training; advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
7. Discipline/Health and Safety: Maintain good order and discipline and safeguard health and safety; participate in curriculum, administration and pastoral meetings.
8. Public Examinations: Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessment for examinations; report and participate in supervision during examinations.
9. Review and Development of Management/Administration: Contribute to selection and development of other teachers; coordinate or manage work of other teachers; participate in curriculum, organisation and pastoral development; assist with administrative tasks and resources; attend assemblies; register attendance and supervise pupils as required.
10. Number of days/Hours of work: Availability for 195 days per year; hours and locations specified by Principal or Board; limits on weekly teaching hours; breaks and other breakdowns as specified; definition of year and week.
11. Staff cover: Supervise and teach pupils in the absence of a teacher under defined conditions related to school size and absence duration. The post is subject to review and can include related duties; commitment to equality and good relations in line with the Northern Ireland Act (1998).

Essential Criteria – Section 1
1. Qualifications/Professional Membership
Hold a teaching qualification meeting requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland. Shortlisting by Application Form.
2. Experience
Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching at Key Stage 2 with positive learning outcomes; experience using a range of classroom strategies; experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning. Shortlisting by Application Form.
3. Other
Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post. Pre-employment check.
Essential Criteria – Section 2
1. Knowledge
Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and Child Protection policy; SEND Code of Practice; a range of teaching strategies; IT systems and digital tools; current assessment methods. Interview.
2. Skills / Abilities
Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; initiative and problem solving; teamwork and communication with pupils, colleagues, parents and the community; motivation of self and others. Interview.
3. Values Orientation
Evidence of alignment with the school’s values and ethos. Interview.
Desirable Criteria
1. Minimum of 3 years’ demonstrable experience teaching at Key Stage 2; experience with job share/principal release; pupil progress monitoring and intervention; ICT/Music/Art involvement; teaching for EAL learners; withdrawal groups.
Criminal background disclosure
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity.
