Consultant Psychiatrist – Male Acute
We are seeking an experienced, full‑time Consultant Psychiatrist to lead our 16‑bed mental health acute service for men. The post holder will work at Cygnet Hospital Sherwood, the state‑of‑the‑art PICU and Acute hospital for men in Nottinghamshire with an "outstanding" CQC rating. The role reports to the Medical Director and is managerially responsible to the Hospital Manager.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the provision of high‑quality care to all ward inpatients.
* Act as a positive role model for patients, families, visitors and staff.
* Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Assess referrals, conduct mental state examinations, and undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis and treatment.
* Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits.
* Implement risk assessment, risk management and embed clinical governance within the service.
* Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals, managers’ hearings and attend hearings.
* Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave.
* Maintain accurate patient records and maintain regular communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
* Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, directors and other concerned bodies, maintaining appropriate reports.
* Attend and contribute to academic meetings and meet the professional standards for CPD as set out by the GMC, the Department of Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Contribute to the telephone on‑call rota, depending on regional needs.
Qualifications & Experience
* Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
* Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC status.
* Experienced and knowledgeable in mental health psychiatry.
* Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
* Strong communication skills – able to interview, assess, treat and document patients clearly.
* Committed to continued professional development.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
