We are looking for a CDM principal designer to join our practice
We are looking for someone to manage all aspects of various multiple size project(s) from inception through to completion; ensure that each project meets client expectations, complies with regulations and is completed on time and within budget. It is anticipated that a Principal Designer will be responsible for numerous projects across the practice for the purposes of CDM compliance.
Location: Dover, Tunbridge Wells, (home working is negotiable)
Contract: Full Time, Permanent.
Salary: up to £55,000pa.
General responsibilities
• Proven experience in undertaking the role of CDM Principal Designer.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and basic Revit preferred but not essential.
• Strong understanding of building codes, regulations, and industry standards.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to present ideas clearly to clients and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience managing teams effectively.
• Assume responsibility for projects from inception to completion for CDM 2015.
• Ensure projects for which you are responsible are delivered within programme and cost parameters.
• Manage and mentor teams.
• Demonstrate an awareness of project resources – money, equipment and people.
• Attend resourcing meetings to ensure understanding of and participation in resourcing needs of the Practice as a whole.
• Propose improved solutions to reduce project costs if needed.
• Ensure smooth handover of project to client.
• Regularly report key project issues to Partner.
• Prepare and present training workshops and design reviews (or HMY equivalent) as necessary.
• Regularly attend marketing events and forge good relationships with industry contacts in order to generate new business.
• Advise on specific health & safety matters
• Working across architectural projects and teams as Principal Designer Lead
• Review projects and designs and support with preconstruction health & safety matters.
• Review projects and designs through RIBA stage 5 & 6 and update CDM H&S matters as required.
• Have detailed working knowledge of cladding typologies.
• Support the client to provide preconstruction information.
• Coordinate all health & safety matters during preconstruction
• Prepare and Issue the health & safety document on completion.
• Work closely with the design team
• Develop guidance materials and management tools.
• Work directly with clients.
• Carry out research on best practice methodology.
• Liaise with enforcing authorities where necessary.
• Navigate and use a CDE interface and curate information as part of the Golden Thread where applicable.
• Mentor and guide junior staff, fostering a culture of learning and professional development within the team.
• Attend project meetings in capacity as Principal Designer (CDM)
• Develop and maintain HMY suite of CDM templates for PD use ensuring all templates are kept up to date with relevant legislation and best practice.
Project specific requirements
• Work with design teams and participate in the preparation of design proposals including budgetary and resourcing aspects, demonstrating awareness of time issues, environmental concerns and client requirements and compliance with the CDM 2015 regulations.
• Obtain client brief and initiate appropriate interpretation.
• Assist in preparing/collating competence declarations
• Input into Project designs, reviewing designs from H&S CDM 2015 perspective including preparation and updates of Design risk registers/documents using graphic representations/drawings and other documentation as required.
• Actively participate in gaining client approval via presentation and attendance at meetings.
• Liaise with senior representatives of the external project team as necessary.
• Identification and collation of all pre-construction information required.
• Preparation and issuing of Pre-Construction information as part of project documentation.
• Instigate and maintain a project H&S risk Register for the Pre-construction phase including any supporting diagrams/drawings required, collating all risks from all consultants into a single document.
• Review Contractors Construction Phase Plan in accordance with the regulations.
• Carry out site visits as required throughout the duration of the project to schedule and ensure prompt and appropriate resolution to any problems that may occur.
• Chair regular specific H&S risk meetings as required by the project. Ensure everyone is briefed and aware of their responsibilities.
• Assist in the collation and preparation of the H&S file.
• Liaise with the Principal Contractor during the Construction phase for Design H&S matters. Report to Client on any issues.
Practice requirements
• Work harmoniously with senior staff and subordinates.
• Support practice policies and procedures.
• Comply with the practice Health and Safety policies.
• Comply with CDM regulations whilst on site.
• Carry out at least 35 hours of CPD per year and ensure CPD log is always up-to-date.
• Maintain a consistent and accurate diary of meetings and actions, and keep all diaries for the duration of your employment with the practice.
• Attend and/or chair meetings as required.
• Participate in practice committees or initiatives as required.
• Participate in the appraisal process for team members.
• Comply with ISO9001 and ensure that all correspondence is filed within specified guidelines.

• Represent the practice and raise its profile in a positive and professional manner at all times.
Qualifications & memberships
• RIBA registered Principal Designer or APS Principal Designer or other recognised professional body preferred if not training will be provided towards this.
• IMaPS, CMaps or FaPS and IOSH or IIRSM member preferred, if not training will be provided towards this
• ARB/RIBA Membership would be an advantage but not critical
Knowledge, skills & experience
• The role would be unlikely to be filled by someone with less than 10 years’ previous experience.
• Knowledge of relevant H&S legislation for Design and Construction is critical.
• Good understanding of all appropriate forms of building contract.
• Previous experience of working within a UK practice – preferred.
• Previous experience of running projects from conception to completion.
• The ability to manage and motivate teams.
• An understanding of client needs and good client management skills.
• Excellent understanding of project programming, project planning and resourcing.
• Proven experience of working on projects of all sizes.
• Thorough knowledge of UK building regulations, British Standards and other relevant statutory legislation.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation abilities.
• Strong presentation skills, both written and verbal.

• Good understanding of and an interest in sustainable and environmental design.
• Good problem-solving skills.
