Job Description

This role is hybrid, consisting of work from our offices and home.

You will ideally be based in and around our Rugby or Glasgow offices.

Motorola Solutions has contracts with a large number of emergency services agencies in the UK, such as police, fire and ambulance services. These contracts include solutions such as Emergency Call Handling systems, Radio Dispatch systems, Computer Aided Dispatch incident management systems, and Mobile Data Capture systems.

The majority of these solutions are offered as a managed service, where Motorola Solutions host and maintain the applications within Motorola Solutions’ own secure data centres.

Each software application is developed and maintained by the respective product and engineering teams and the coordination for deployment of these applications in line with Customer requirements is coordinated by the respective deployment teams. Similarly, the application hosting of these software solutions is owned by the respective Application Hosting teams. All of those functions are outside of the scope of this role.

The scope of this senior role is concerned with designing, building, maintaining and supporting the core platform which hosts these mission critical applications. This includes:

1. the base physical hardware (servers, switches, firewalls, storage, etc.) within our data centres

2. the networking, routing, firewalling and general traffic management within our hosted platform

3. the ingress/egress routes into our hosted platform (such as third party private circuits; internet connections; VPNs; etc.)

4. the security and accreditation of the hosted platform, including ensuring that we maintain our annual IT Health Check (ITHC) and national accreditations

5. the uptime and performance of the base platform (inc. hardware and network performance) in line with our customer expectations for mission critical systems

6. technical documentation sets associated with the hosted platform

7. management of the team 24/7 on-call rota

The Senior Systems Engineer will:

8. Report to the Head of UK Hosted Software Platform

9. Work alongside a team of infrastructure and network engineers, responsible for maintaining our base hardware platform and network infrastructure. As the senior engineer, the candidate will be expected to provide mentoring and guidance to intermediate and junior engineers within the team

10. Active liaise and work with the respective staff from our hosted application teams (for Mobile Data; Emergency Call Handling; etc.)

11. Actively liaise and work with the Motorola Solutions UK service desk and resolver teams

12. Actively liaise and work with key stakeholders from Motorola Solutions such as Product Managers, Deployment Managers, Product Directors, etc.

Typical job responsibilities will include:

13. Production of outline system designs and specifications: including overall architectures, typologies, configuration databases

14. Production of design documentation for networks and networking technology within the Infrastructure as a Service hosted solutions. Specification of user/system interfaces, including validation and error correction procedures, processing rules, access, security and audit controls.

15. Assessment of associated risks, and specification of recovery routines and contingency procedures. Translation of logical designs into physical designs.

16. Undertaking of routine installations and de-installations of items of hardware and/or software. Responsibility to take action to ensure targets are met within established safety and quality procedures, including, where appropriate, handover to the client.

17. Conducting tests of hardware and/or software using supplied test procedures and diagnostic tools. Correction of malfunctions, calling on other experienced colleagues and external resources if required.

18. Documentation of details of all hardware/software items that have been installed and removed.

19. Initiation and monitoring of actions to investigate and resolve problems in systems and services. Assisting with the implementation of agreed remedies and preventative measures.

20. Specification of user/system interfaces, and translation of logical designs into physical designs taking account of target environment, performance requirements and existing systems.

21. Production of detailed designs and documents all work using required standards, methods and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate.


Basic Requirements

The post holder will demonstrate the following competencies:

26. A level-headed character who can remain calm and maintain composure during major incidents and/or outages

28. Must be able to work ‘on call’

29. Must be able to attain SC and NPPV3 clearances

Mandatory:

30. 7+ years industry experience

31. A strong track record of architecting, delivering and operating within large hosted platforms and data centres

32. A strong understanding of fundamental system level design, system life cycle management

33. A strong knowledge of IT server hardware equipment & operating systems

34. A strong understanding of networking and routing technologies, including resilient, fault-tolerant design patterns for high availability / zero downtime

35. A strong understanding of virtualisation technologies (such as VMWare) and containerisation technologies (such as Kubernetes/Docker)

36. Experience working within teams of infrastructure and/or network engineers

37. Experience operating within ITIL processes including service design, service operation and change management

38. Experience working with security, penetration testing, IT Healthchecks and security certifications

Desirable:

39. A formal qualification (Degree) in Computing Science, Network Engineering or equivalent experience.

40. Professional certifications such as networking, ITIL, cybersecurity, Microsoft etc.

41. Experience managing and operating high availability (99.95%+) mission critical solutions

42. Experience with HPE server and storage hardware

43. Experience with VMWare virtualisation technologies

44. Experience with Checkpoint, Fortinet or NSX-T

45. Experience with Microsoft Server, Microsoft SQL Server, etc.

46. Experience with Linux

47. Experience with SOAP and REST APIs
