Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and innovative Senior Clinical Psychologist to work in our Tier 3 River team in Lambeth CAMHS. The post is a 12-month fixed-term position, providing maternity cover.

The post holder will provide a highly specialist clinical psychology role for children with complex mental health presentations. You will have the opportunity to offer advanced assessment, therapeutic skills, supervision, and consultation to support therapeutic work in the service. This role is an excellent opportunity for the post holder to develop advanced therapeutic skills, supervision, consultation, service development, and leadership in CAMHS. The post holder will hold and develop advanced clinical psychology skills for children and families presenting with self-harming behaviors and emotional dysregulation.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist input to assessment, formulation, and treatment planning of children with complex mental health concerns, based on your specialist and advanced theoretical knowledge, up-to-date literature, and evidence-based practices. You will formulate clinical presentations and provide specialist clinical psychology skills, therapeutic input, and consultation to support assessments and treatment planning.

The post will be based in the Lambeth CAMHS River team, which is a friendly, dynamic, and dedicated multidisciplinary team including CAMHS Practitioners from various backgrounds. You will demonstrate an interest in multi-agency and multidisciplinary work, be familiar with evidence-based practices, especially for children with neurodevelopmental concerns, and be supported to work independently with good clinical and case management skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Provide specialist input to assessment, formulation, and treatment planning for children with complex mental health concerns, including risk assessment.
* Contribute to intake assessment clinics for children and young people presenting with mental health difficulties.
* Provide specialist clinical psychology skills, therapeutic input, and consultation to support assessments and treatment planning, including children with anxiety, low mood, developmental issues, and neurodevelopmental concerns.
* Manage a caseload of children with complex mental health issues such as anxiety, low mood, self-harm, and emotional regulation difficulties.
* Deliver clinical interventions aligned with NICE guidelines and service pathways, including CBT, DBT, and systemic support.
* Undertake standardized cognitive assessments, produce psychometric reports, and supervise junior staff in assessment procedures.
* Use observational and screening measures to aid diagnosis and formulation, supporting junior staff in these methods.
* Teach and support parents and carers in managing behavioral challenges and child mental health issues.
* Consult with other professionals and liaise with schools, nurseries, social care, and other agencies involved in children's care.
* Share psychological knowledge through training sessions for parents, professionals, and colleagues, and support implementation of psychological interventions.
* Act as a duty Senior Clinician, supporting junior staff and participating in the CAMHS duty system.
* Support service development, review treatment pathways, and contribute to service evaluation and audits.
* Work within BPS and HCPC guidelines, taking responsibility for own work and decisions with supervision.

Person specification

Training

* Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent.
* Registered with HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist.
* Additional training specific to working with children with complex mental health needs.

Knowledge

* Specialist psychological skills and knowledge of theories relevant to children with moderate to severe mental health needs and challenging behaviors.
* Knowledge of psychological assessments, clinical psychometrics, legislation, and confidentiality principles.
* Doctoral-level knowledge of research methodology and complex statistics.
* Understanding of factors affecting access and acceptability of mental health care.
* Advanced knowledge of clinical and practice issues for children in CAMHS.

Experience

* Experience in clinical assessments, formulation, and interventions with children and young people.
* Experience supervising junior staff and contributing to service development and leadership.

Skills

* Ability to deliver psychological therapy using multiple models, including adapted CBT for neurodevelopmental difficulties.
* Skilled in administering and interpreting complex assessment tools and psychometric tests.
* Effective consultation and training skills for multidisciplinary teams.
* Advanced therapeutic skills for complex mental health presentations in children.
