About The Role

Balfour Beatty are looking for an experienced Utility Asset Protection Survey Manager to join our team on the Lower Thames Crossing Pilgrims Lane, RM165UZ project – one of the UK’s most ambitious infrastructure programmes.

In this role, you’ll take ownership of all utility survey requirements across survey, design and construction phases. You’ll lead a team of Utility Survey Engineers, set the standard for safe survey practices, and ensure accurate data underpins every decision we make when working around existing and proposed utilities.

This is an exciting opportunity to influence how utility survey works are delivered, to embed digital innovation, and to support our mission of achieving Zero Harm while driving operational excellence.

What you'll be doing

* Managing all utility PAS 128 surveys to support the project’s master utility model.
* Leading and developing a team of Utility Survey Engineers to ensure accuracy, reliability, and safety of survey data.
* Coordinating with survey, design, and construction teams to ensure compliance with HSG47, GS6, PAS128, PAS256 and Balfour Beatty procedures.
* Producing and managing 2D/3D/4D/5D models, CAD/GIS overlays, annotated PDFs and digital datasets.
* Validating survey data, updating the Common Data Environment, and issuing live drawing information to support safe permits to dig.
* Providing technical guidance to service locators and surveyors when additional expertise is required.
* Driving innovation and digital coordination to support our 25 by 2025 initiative – reducing site-based construction activity through smarter, safer, and more efficient approaches.
* Supporting the development of junior survey engineers, sharing good practice, and embedding “Safety by Design” in everything you do.

Who we're looking for

You’ll be a confident leader with strong technical expertise in utility surveying, digital modelling, and safe working around services. You’ll thrive in a collaborative environment and be motivated by solving problems and driving improvements.

* Significant experience of managing utility survey works and data in accordance with PAS128 and PAS256.
* QCF Level 5 (Diploma in Utility Mapping and Surveying)
* Significant experience in working with and adhering to Statutory Undertakers protection protocols.
* Able to validate survey data, identify clashes and advise on issues with service drawings and live site markups.
* Competent in the use and management off Sevey equipment, including GPS, Total Station, GPR and CAT and Genny
* Knowledge of the dangers and control measures associated with Avoiding Danger from Services HSG47 and GS6.
* Experience of managing survey data throughout the project life cycle
* Experience of resource planning, management of Surveyors and mobilisation of works to maintain site expectations.
* Firm understanding of and belief to drive health & safety principles in line with Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm philosophy
* Comprehensive understanding and experience of a wide range of construction techniques and best practices, specifically regarding service avoidance.
* Computer competence (E-mail, MS word, excel & intranet)
* Thorough understanding of CAD Packages used in Large Route maps, detail design drawings in a Utility & Civils Environment
