Job Summary
Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of cancer patients? As a Healthcare Support Worker you will play a crucial role in delivering compassionate, patient‑centred care at the Ricky Grant Day Unit and Turner Ward. You will assist with personal care, perform essential clinical tasks such as venepuncture and ECGs, and advocate for patient safety and wellbeing, contributing meaningfully to the patient journey.
Main Duties of the Job
* Provide patient‑centred care in line with Trust policies, including personal care, oral care and supporting toileting and continence needs.
* Undertake training to perform high quality clinical interventions, remaining competent in observations, venepuncture, ECGs, cannula insertion/removal, urinalysis, and blood glucose monitoring.
* Assess patients’ conditions using tools such as NEWS2 and pain assessments, and escalating concerns appropriately.
* Work independently or as part of a team, prioritising patient needs and ensuring accurate use of equipment.
* Support patients at risk of harm (falls, pressure damage) by following care plans and reporting changes via the Trust’s incident reporting system.
* Maintain accurate documentation (care plans, observations, fluid/food charts).
* Provide guidance to less experienced staff, ensuring safe practice, maintaining clinical environments and performing quality control checks.

Work with a friendly and dynamic team supporting patients on the Ricky Grant Day Unit and Turner Ward – an 18‑bedbeded shared ward with specialist multidisciplinary cover. All positions are based at Torbay Hospital, Lowes Bridge, Torquay (TQ2 7AA).

Qualifications and Training
* NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification/experience.
* Care certificate English & Mathematics at GCSE grade A‑C (9‑4) or level 2 functional skills (desirable).
Knowledge and Experience
* Previous experience in a care environment or demonstrable caring nature/life experience.
* Understanding of strict confidentiality requirements.
* Working knowledge of complex care needs of some individuals/families, including safeguarding children & adults, domestic abuse and mental health (desirable).
Specific Skills
* Basic computer/keyboard skills.
* Good interpersonal and communication skills, ability to adapt communication style.
* Record‑keeping competency in handwritten and electronic records.
* Flexible, adaptable, reliable and punctual.
* Fine motor skills for venepuncture, phlebotomy and other clinical tasks.
* Healthcare competencies appropriate to area of work (desirable).
