About The Role
We are looking for an experienced Freelance Broadcasting Engineer with solid expertise in the SMPTE environment. In this role, you will support the planning, build‑out, operation, and troubleshooting of complex broadcast infrastructures, whether in the studio, on location (OB/remote), or in hybrid IP‑based production environments. You will work alongside experienced production and technology teams, taking technical ownership of the complete signal chain, from camera to playout.
Conditions
* Contract: Freelance
* Start: within 1‑2 months
* Duration: 12 months with possibility for extension
* Workload: up to 100%
Your Responsibilities
System Design & Integration
* Design and integrate broadcast infrastructures based on SMPTE standards (incl. ST 2110, ST 2022, ST 292, ST 424)
* Configure and commission SDI‑ and IP‑based video/audio routing systems
* Build and test signal chains across the full production path (camera, CCU, crosspoint, monitoring, production switcher, playout)
* Support deployment and commissioning of camera systems and associated broadcast equipment at customer sites and production facilities
Operations & Technical Support
* Provide hands‑on technical support during live productions, broadcast transmissions, and studio operations
* Diagnose and resolve signal issues, synchronisation problems, and latency anomalies in real‑time environments
* Manage timing and sync infrastructure (Genlock, PTP/IEEE 1588, Black Burst)
* Serve as on‑site technical liaison between engineering teams and production crews
Documentation & Coordination
* Create and maintain technical documentation, signal flow diagrams, and as‑built records
* Coordinate with directors, production managers, and other technical departments
* Ensure quality assurance against broadcast standards (EBU, SMPTE, DVB)
* Feed operational learnings back into product teams where relevant
We Are Looking For
Core Technical Knowledge
* Solid understanding of SMPTE standards — particularly ST 2110 (IP‑based broadcasting) and SDI signal chains
* Hands‑on experience with professional broadcast hardware (routing switchers, multiviewers, frame synchronisers, format converters)
* Familiarity with video and audio formats: HD, UHD/4K, HDR, AES, MADI, Dolby
* Working knowledge of broadcast network technologies (VLAN, multicast, IGMP, PTP)
Experience & Background
* Several years of professional experience as a Broadcast Engineer, Systems Engineer, or comparable technical role in a TV, film, or live event environment
* Proven track record in at least one of the following: live production / OB, studio operations, post‑production, playout / master control
* Familiarity with industry hardware ecosystems (e.g. Grass Valley, Sony, Evertz, Lawo, Ross Video, Riedel) is a strong advantage
* Experience working with or alongside camera and imaging technology manufacturers is a plus
Working Style & Soft Skills
* Self‑directed and structured — able to take ownership in high‑pressure, time‑critical live environments
* Clear communicator who can interface confidently with both technical crews and non‑technical stakeholders
* Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, evening productions, and travel
* Professional proficiency in English required; additional languages (German, French, Spanish) are an advantage
Nice To Have
* Industry certifications (e.g. SMPTE Certified Broadcast Engineer, SBE certification)
* Scripting or automation skills for broadcast workflows (Python, Bash/Shell)
* Experience with cloud or remote production infrastructure (REMI, at‑home production models)
* Knowledge of fibre infrastructure and transmission technology (SFP, CWDM, RF)
* Background in audio engineering or IT/network administration
* Experience with ARRI, Sony, or comparable professional cinema camera systems
