The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5thin the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. The School was responsible for 3 of the 9 impact case studies returned with Art & Design in the last REF, namely; “A neighbourhood model for age-friendly policy and practice: engaged design and research for urban ageing”, “Heritage action: discovering, preserving and celebrating post-war modern architecture”, and “Complex sustainable futures: disruptive technologies in urban transformation”.
This specific tutor role is to work within the&rchitecture atelier. &rchitecture explores the potential for architects to affect positive change through inclusive and engaged practices. In doing this, we attempt to reconcile who we are as people with what we do as architects, rather than fall into habitual norms and practices that perpetuate many of the inequalities that are evident in society. In BA3 and M.Arch1, our students work alongside real-world collaborators to justify new forms of socially-engaged architectural practice through professionally rigour design projects. In M.Arch2, students investigate how creative processes can play a role in addressing issues of spatial exclusion, explored through an individual design-led thesis of their choosing.
The successful candidate will be a qualified architect or someone with experience in architecture, art and related practices addressing issues of spatial inclusion. The applicant will contribute to teaching on the Master of Architecture course, and have experience or knowledge of creative design-research methodologies, inclusive design approaches, participatory and collaborative design, social, technical and environmental sustainability (e.g. degrowth/circular economies).
The post holder must be able to:
* Understanding of and experience of responding to issues of social justice through inclusive design practices
* Experience of creative design-research in art and architecture and/or engage with unconventional architectural practice
* Knowledge of circular and community economies in relation to sustainable architecture
