ROLE: Pastoral and Welfare Officer
LOCATION: Wakefield
START DATE: ASAP

Are you a Psychology Graduate looking to build hands-on experience before moving into Educational Psychology, Child Psychology, Counselling, or a SEND-focused career?

Or maybe you’ve already worked as a SEN Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Support Worker, or Pastoral Support, and you’re ready for a role with more responsibility and impact.

We’re recruiting on behalf of a supportive secondary school in Wakefield who are looking for a Pastoral and Welfare Officer to join their pastoral and behaviour team on a full-time basis. This is a key role within the school, supporting pupils to stay engaged, regulated, and ready to learn.

You’ll be working with students aged 11 to 16, supporting a range of needs including social, emotional and mental health, behavioural challenges, attendance concerns, and special educational needs. The role also involves liaising with families, careers teams, and external agencies when needed.

The role will involve

1. Supporting a designated cohort of pupils across KS3 and KS4

2. Promoting positive behaviour, wellbeing, and emotional regulation

3. Supporting attendance, engagement, and overall welfare

4. Working closely with teaching staff, SENCOs, and the wider pastoral team

5. Building trusted relationships with pupils who need consistency and reassurance

You’ll be joining a warm, experienced pastoral team who genuinely value the work they do and support one another.

The ideal candidate

6. Has experience supporting young people with SEMH and/or SEND

7. Is calm, empathetic, and confident working with secondary-aged pupils

8. Has experience in an education, care, or youth setting (preferred, but not essential)

9. Is looking to build meaningful, long-term experience in a school environment

Contract details

10. Full-time role, Monday to Friday

11. Term-time only, following the local authority academic calendar

12. Working hours: 8:30am – 4:15pm

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
