NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS. It saves thousands of lives by collecting over 2.5 million donations of blood and blood products every year. It also delivers a range of ocular grafts for use in ophthalmic surgery.You will be an integral part of the Eye Bank Team who process retrieved donated corneas into clinical standard grafts following Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), for use in the replacement of corneas. The Eye Bank also receive donated blood and manufacture into Serum Eyedrops, a life changing medicine that improves sight and quality of life for patients.Working in a fast moving and variable environment your essential role will directly contribute to saving and improving lives.You will undertake an extensive induction and training programme, with ongoing assessment, and receive ongoing development to support you in your role and achieving your career ambitions.
Main duties of the job
In this role you will support and assist in the work of the Eye Bank under supervision, performing a range of routine tasks. Your day to day responsibilities will include:
* Performing a range of routine tasks in a defined area of Eye services, such as dispensing of Serum Eye Drops
* Working flexibly across the range of activities as rostered.
* Updating production records written and/or electronic.
* Sending microbiology samples.
* Monitoring and maintaining laboratory stocks and supplies on a daily basis to help optimise use of consumables and reduce wastage.
* Carrying out duties related to the cleaning of the laboratory, equipment and storage areas to ensure a clean environment for the processing, storage and release of serum eyedrops and tissue grafts.
* Filing and archiving of production records.
* Shift times 10:00 18:00, Monday to Friday

Qualifications
* An interest in science demonstrated through qualification, training or experience.
Experience
* Able and prepared to work with human blood and tissues.
* Experience of applying basic keyboard skills for example in the use of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), or equivalent Systems.
