Weekend Recycling Attendant Location: Holywood (HRC) Hours: Weekends - Saturday 08:00-17:00 (9 hours), Sunday 10:00-16:00 (6 hours) Employer: Local Council About the Role We're looking for a reliable, proactive and customer-centric Weekend Recycling Attendant to join our team at the Household Recycling Centres. You'll play a key role in keeping the site safe, clean and efficient, while helping residents recycle responsibly and in line with environmental standards. Key Responsibilities Site Operations & Security Open, close and secure the Household Recycling Centres at scheduled times as instructed by the Supervisor/Manager. Control access to the site and ensure only authorised users enter. Prevent illegal or commercial misuse of the site and check relevant paperwork where required. Site Cleanliness & Maintenance Keep the site, staff buildings and surrounding footpaths clean, tidy and safe at all times. Carry out cleansing schedules and ensure waste is stored appropriately. Monitor stock levels of cleaning materials and equipment, reporting needs to the Supervisor. Distribute salt/grit during frost, ice or snow to maintain safe access. Equipment Use & Monitoring Operate site machinery such as compactors, woodrollers and cardboard balers. Conduct basic maintenance checks, health and safety inspections and report defects promptly. Ensure supplies for equipment are available by notifying the Supervisor. Customer Support & Waste Guidance Advise and assist members of the public on how to segregate and deposit waste correctly, including hazardous materials (e.g., oils, batteries, paints, fluorescent tubes). Ensure waste is handled and stored safely and in line with the site's Waste Management Licence and Operational Plan. Support recycling and reuse initiatives, including surveys and competitions. Traffic & Container Management Manage the flow of vehicles on site, especially during busy periods, ensuring one-way systems are followed. Assist collection vehicle drivers and maintain safe distances for site users using temporary barriers. Ensure containers are filled and emptied efficiently, contacting contractors or Council teams when required. Data Recording & Compliance Record and store all relevant data (digital and paper) in line with Council policies, including commercial vehicle control data, Waste Transfer Notes and Consignment Notes. Record tonnages of waste removed from the site where required. Maintain the site diary and report accidents, incidents, near misses, complaints, breakdowns or unpermitted waste immediately. Support external inspections and ensure all activities comply with health and safety legislation, EMS (ISO 14001), Safe Systems of Work and licencing conditions. Additional Responsibilities Ensure WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is separated correctly as part of the site's Designated Collection Facility duties. Represent the Council professionally, enhancing its reputation and public profile. Promote and comply with equality, health and safety and all relevant Council policies. What We're Looking For Someone dependable, safety‑conscious and comfortable working outdoors. Good communication skills and a helpful attitude when dealing with the public. Ability to follow procedures, operate equipment (training provided) and work independently. A commitment to environmental responsibility and excellent customer service. Essential At least one year's experience in paid employment of outdoor manual work in all weather conditions At least one year's experience in paid employment of dealing with contractors and/or customers Experience in the use of Microsoft Office packages Experience in the operations of electronic devices such as mobile phones or tablets.
