Purpose of the Role
St Raphael’s Hospice is seeking an experienced and values-driven Interim Director of Fundraising & Communications to provide leadership, stability and strategic direction across fundraising, supporter care and communications during a transitional period.
Working closely with the Commercial Director and senior leadership team, the postholder will lead income generation and communications activity, ensuring strong performance, effective collaboration and alignment with the hospice’s strategic priorities. The role will directly line manage the Head of Fundraising, Head of Supporter Care and Head of Communications.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
* Provide clear, confident leadership to the fundraising and communications directorate, fostering a positive, collaborative and high-performing culture.
* Lead the development, refinement and oversight of the Fundraising and Communications Strategy for 2026/27, ensuring it is ambitious, deliverable and aligned with the hospice’s overall strategic priorities.
* Work with the Commercial Director to ensure alignment between fundraising, retail, commercial and communications activity.
* Contribute to organisational strategy and senior leadership discussions, bringing insight on income generation, brand and supporter engagement.
Fundraising & Income Generation
* Oversee the delivery of fundraising plans across all income streams, including community, events, individual giving, major gifts and corporate fundraising.
* Support the Head of Fundraising to maintain momentum, manage risks and identify opportunities for growth.
* Ensure fundraising activity is compliant, ethical and aligned with the hospice’s values.
Supporter Care
* Provide leadership and oversight of supporter care functions, including the hospice lottery, ensuring excellent supporter experience, stewardship and effective management of regular giving relationships.
* Support the development of effective systems, processes and ways of working that enable strong supporter relationships.
Communications & Engagement
* Lead strategic communications, ensuring consistent, clear and engaging messaging across internal and external channels.
* Support the Head of Communications to strengthen the hospice’s profile, brand and storytelling, highlighting impact and building trust with supporters and the wider community.
* Ensure effective internal communications that support staff and volunteer engagement and understanding.
Leadership & Management
* Directly line manage the Head of Fundraising, Head of Supporter Care and Head of Communications, providing support, challenge and guidance.
* Ensure teams have clear priorities, are well supported and working effectively together.
* Act as a visible and approachable leader during the interim period.
Governance, Reporting & Performance
* Monitor performance against plans and budgets, providing clear reporting and insight to the executive team and trustees as required.
* Support robust planning, risk management and use of data to inform decision-making.
