Senior Character Artist (Creatures)
Job Type: Full-time (6-month contract, with opportunity to extend)
Salary: £4,000-4,500 per month
Level of Expertise: Senior
Location: Cambridge, UK / Remote
World Makers is a game development studio building immersive, visually striking multiplayer experiences. We're looking for a Senior Character Artist (Creatures) to help define and deliver high-quality, performant creature assets that bring our worlds and gameplay to life.
In this role, you'll work closely with art, design, animation, and engineering to create memorable creatures that are both visually compelling and practical for real-time production. You'll take ownership of creature creation from high-level visual interpretation through to in-game implementation, helping us build creatures that support gameplay clarity, technical performance, and a strong creative identity.
We're looking for someone with exceptional creature art fundamentals and strong real-time instincts: an artist who can build high-quality work, solve production problems, and contribute to efficient pipelines and workflows in Unreal Engine 5.
Responsibilities
* Create high-quality, game-ready creature characters from concept art, references, and written design direction.
* Sculpt, model, texture, and implement creatures that meet artistic, gameplay, and technical requirements.
* Work closely with design and animation to ensure creatures support gameplay readability, strong silhouettes, and clear behavioural roles.
* Collaborate with technical art and engineering to ensure creature assets are optimized for real-time multiplayer gameplay in Unreal Engine 5.
* Help define and refine creature pipelines, asset standards, and best practices for efficient production.
* Contribute to creature development across a range of archetypes, from simple production-efficient enemies to hero or showcase creatures.
* Balance visual ambition with practical production constraints, choosing solutions that maximize quality, speed, and reusability.
* Support implementation needs such as materials, shaders, modular creature parts, and integration workflows where needed.
* Give clear, constructive feedback to other artists and help raise the quality bar across the team.
* Stay up to date with modern creature-art workflows, real-time character techniques, and emerging tools that improve quality and speed.
Skills & Requirements
* Significant professional experience as a Character Artist in games, with a strong portfolio demonstrating excellent creature work for real-time applications.
* Proven ability to create compelling, game-ready creatures with strong anatomy, form language, materials, and texture definition.
* Strong proficiency in industry-standard tools such as Maya or Blender, ZBrush, Substance Painter, and Photoshop.
* Strong understanding of real-time art pipelines, optimization, and implementation for games.
* Experience working in Unreal Engine 5 or a comparable real-time engine.
* Strong understanding of topology, UVs, baking, texturing, and material creation for performant in-game assets.
* Ability to collaborate effectively with animation, technical art, design, and engineering.
* Strong eye for shape language, silhouette readability, and how creature visuals support gameplay roles.
* Self-motivated and production-minded, with the ability to take ownership and move work forward with minimal supervision.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to both give and receive feedback constructively.
What Success Looks Like
* You create creatures that are distinctive, readable, and exciting in motion.
* Your work holds up visually while remaining efficient and practical for implementation.
* You help the team move quickly by making smart trade-offs and improving workflows, not just producing great individual assets.
* You contribute as a senior craftsperson who can both build exceptional creature art and support the wider pipeline when needed. That aligns with recent internal discussion around stronger expectations for character artists to contribute beyond pure asset production where appropriate.
