SALARY: £46,161 - £49,337 per annum + Benefits (see below)
(The advertised salary includes a market supplement of £10,553 per annum pro-rata, which is reviewed biennially)

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for an IT Systems Engineer / 2nd Line & 3rd Line Support Technician (officially known in the University as a Systems Engineer ) with experience planning and implementing Desktop Builds, Group Policy Deployments, Virtualised Servers and supporting Windows and Linux environments and the general IT infrastructure.
Working as an IT Systems Engineer / 2nd Line & 3rd Line Support Technician you will have experience at a technical level in the development, deployment, support and maintenance of IT infrastructure components such as servers, storage, virtualisation, desktop systems, identity management, security etc.
As an IT Systems Engineer / 2nd Line & 3rd Line Support Technician you will be part of the team responsible for the design, development and support of the universitys campus-wide IT infrastructure and an ambitious plan to develop and innovate its IT infrastructure and invest in the development of its staff to best support modern learning environments and research programmes.
DUTIES
Your duties as an IT Systems Engineer / 2nd Line & 3rd Line Support Technician will include:
Technical planning and implementation of End User Computing activities such as desktop builds and group policy deployments
Develop and support Windows and Linux Servers on associated hardware
Develop and support Virtualised Servers (e.g. using VMware or Nutanix)
Configure and deploy Applications (e.g. using System Center Configuration Manger, Citrix, Intune, JAMF) and provide third line support where required
VDI development and support
Develop and manage the universities Identity Management Systems
Administer, maintain and support M365 services, providing and implementing recommendations for change
SAN management and development
Develop and support Windows 10/11 and macOS systems and associated applications, e.g. Office 365, Adobe CC Suite, Engineering Applications etc
Ensure that all relevant support documentation is maintained to reflect changes and additions to the Universitys infrastructure
Adhere and contribute to change control processes
Adhere to project development standards
Ensure work is delivered in accordance with current IT security and quality standards and procedures
Act as a mentor to colleagues developing their technical skills and understanding of the universities IT systems and standards
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL
Educated to Degree Level. For exceptional candidates, significant working experience and a demonstrable track record will be accepted as an alternative
An understanding of current developments and trends in IT
Awareness of ITIL service delivery and support processes
Experience with:
Experience of working within structured projects
Third line support, troubleshooting and resolving major incidents
Experience of AD and EntraID design and maintenance
Server and desktop deployment including virtualisation, configuration, installation and upgrades
Performance management, capacity monitoring & optimisation, security management
Endpoint and Mobile Device Management e.g. Intune and JAMF
Application virtualisation
Systems management, preferably SCCM
Desktop OS preferably Windows 10 and above, and macOS
Windows Server 2012R2 and above
Microsoft and Office 365
Exchange 2019
Redhat Linux
SAN management
DESIRABLE
Qualifications and Professional Memberships
Professional Qualifications/Certification i.e. Microsoft, Linux, VMware, Nutanix or Citrix
Knowledge and experience of:
Familiar with High-Performance Computing technologies
Awareness of configuration management
Familiar with business continuity planning
Providing IT infrastructure support in an environment servicing 500+ users
Supervisory experience of junior staff at a technical level
Working in a higher education environment
Experience of a wide range of Linux distributions
Experience of Citrix XenDesktop 7
Experience of cloud hosting platforms
Experience of maintaining LAMP environments
Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) such as Moodle
Network infrastructure and technologies
