Supervises

Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.


Job Goal

To develop in each student an awareness of proper health/hygiene practices in order that all students may derive both intellectual and practical benefits in the field of health education.


Qualifications

Possess valid Alabama Teacher Certificate; Proper Endorsement in Teaching Field; and such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.

To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.


Performance Responsibilities

1. Teach skills, knowledge and facts pertaining to one or more courses/units of health education. One unit during the semester will consist of AIDS instruction. All instruction will utilize the course of study approved by the state and other appropriate learning activities.
2. Demonstrate health education concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher-prepared charts, sketches and other instructional aids.
3. Conceive and supervise a variety of programs and displays concerning health and safety education.
4. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
5. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
6. Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilizes appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
7. Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
8. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
9. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation.
10. Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
11. Sponsor student extracurricular organizations as requested.
12. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
13. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
14. Assist the administration with and/or supervises entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons areas as assigned.
15. In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives and student outcomes.
16. Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
17. Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
18. In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process, the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school.
19. Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
20. Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
21. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
22. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
23. Participate in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, and inservice and staff development activities as required or assigned.
24. Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
25. Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and generally conducive to learning.
26. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
2. Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
3. Good knowledge of the school's program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
4. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
5. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
6. Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
8. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
9. Excellent human relations skills.
10. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high‑intensive work environment.


Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Occasionally the employee bends or twists at the neck more than the average person. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well‑being or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
