Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a role as HEMS Paramedic (Trainee Critical Care Paramedic). Based initially at the airbase in Thruxton and later at the new airbase at Southampton Airport, this is a developmental role within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) in partnership with the University Hospital Southampton.
As part of our ongoing development, we are expanding our team and seeking experienced paramedics who are committed to personal development and delivering the highest standards of clinical care in challenging pre-hospital environments. Successful applicants will undertake the Critical Care Paramedic training programme, including enrolment at St George’s University on the Advanced Practice MSc.
Main responsibilities
* Deliver specialised clinical practice within pre-hospital emergency care, acting as a role model within the Critical Care Team.
* Practice as a Trainee Critical Care Paramedic in partnership with a HEMS doctor or as part of a paramedic team to deliver enhanced care to high-acuity patients in the pre-hospital setting.
* Use collaborative and independent judgment to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate clinical care and management of patients attended to by the Critical Care Team.
* Work within the multidisciplinary team to deliver clinical practice, leadership, support, and structured teaching for multidisciplinary professionals to facilitate ongoing education, training and development.
* Support service development, including the implementation of multidisciplinary guidelines and protocols, incorporating current evidence in consultation with medical and paramedic staff.
* Demonstrate responsibility for continuing professional development through work-based and service-provided training.
* Engage with all stakeholders involved with the HIOWAA charity and foster partnership working with local and neighbouring ambulance services to deliver high-quality services.

* Enrolment at St George’s University on the Advanced Practice MSc as part of the role.

* Assessment centre dates: 21st / 22nd October.
* Interviews: Week commencing 27th October.
Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria:
* Very experienced blue light driver with UK Driving Licence with no more than 3 penalty points. Level 3 CERAD Emergency Driving Qualification (or IHCD Emergency Driving qualification with willingness to undertake additional training).
* Significant experience in a pre-hospital emergency care setting. Registered paramedic (HCPC) with no restrictions on practice. Successful completion of BSc in Paramedic Science or equivalent or recent academic study at Level 6 (subject to HEI entry requirements).
* Ability to listen to others, appreciate a variety of opinions and adapt to environments and situations in a responsible, controlled manner.
* Demonstrable on-scene and multi-agency management skills to handle busy, complex situations and achieve the best outcomes.
* Demonstrable team membership and aptitude for working in a high-performing pre-hospital environment. Willingness to undertake training and demonstrate competency in NVIS/NVG equipment for night-time operations, as required.
* Participation in audit or quality improvement activities.
* Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure.
