Senior Training Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Job Summary

The training we offer is designed to help doctors who intend to pursue further training in specialties such as GP, medical, surgical, EM and anaesthetics. It takes place on the ward, ITU, outpatients and in the operating theatre. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who will make use of the training opportunities that will significantly develop your career portfolio.

Main duties of the job

You will work with a team of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Trust Doctors, Specialty Trainees, Core Trainees and Foundation Trainees. The post includes a generic clinical component in the relevant area and an agreed experience in the specialty of choice, including outpatient clinics, ward cover, specialist in‑patient reviews and procedures, audit and research. Teamwork and excellent interpersonal skills are essential.

University Hospitals of North Midlands has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke‑on‑Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. We provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care.

Job responsibilities

* Provide clinical care across ward, ITU, outpatient and operating theatre settings.
* Participate in MDTs and Clinical Governance Meetings.
* Engage in regular teaching, audit, research, presentations and publications.
* Work under a named Clinical Supervisor with regular appraisals.
* Attend local teaching, weekly Grand Rounds and critical care ward rounds with Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetists.
* Perform supervised procedures such as saphenous vein harvesting, closure of wounds, and sternotomy.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent.
* Eligible for full GMC Registration via the PLAB test or MTI route (AoMRC), or completed all parts (1, 2 & PACES) of the MRCP (UK) examinations with IELTS (UKVI Academic) requirements if relevant.
* EPIC verification of qualifications for international doctors depending on primary medical qualifications.

Desirable Qualifications

* Awards or distinctions whilst studying for the first degree.
* Academic and extracurricular achievements, ALS certification.

Essential Clinical Experience

* Foundation competencies or equivalent for those with full GMC registration.
* 3 years continuous post‑qualification experience in the relevant specialty meeting the prerequisites of the Medical Training Initiative programme of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

Desirable Clinical Experience

* Evidence of experience supported by references.
* Attainment of the UK Foundation Programme or an equivalent level of experience.
