Background The Department of Dentistry, School of Health Sciences, College of Medicine and Health at The University of Birmingham invites applications from exceptional and ambitious biological scientists for the role of Assistant or Associate Professor in Oral Biology. The successful applicant will join a highly motivated, collaborative and successful interdisciplinary team focusing on the biological basis of oral and related systemic diseases and on developing innovative solutions that impact clinical care. Dentistry offers a vibrant and inclusive environment and was ranked highly in REF2021, with 4* outputs in the top 12% of 90 submissions. There is opportunity to contribute to high-profile research and work with world-leading researchers from across the University and beyond.

The appointee should enhance the Department’s research by establishing collaborations that exploit the interdisciplinary environment at Birmingham, and by delivering high-quality research outputs that contribute to innovation and impact through growth of existing and new programmes.

Responsibilities

* Demonstrate strategic and operational academic leadership with a clear vision for the future in oral biology and related medical fields.
* Support and develop undergraduate and postgraduate teaching related to oral biology, incorporating their own research experience and expertise.

Role Summary

The role is based in Edgbaston. Key duties include giving lectures and seminars, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students, course development and innovation, participating in examinations, conducting innovative research, publishing in journals/books, and obtaining research grant funding.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a relevant subject and postdoctoral experience, with a track record in teaching at a higher education institution. They should actively contribute to the portfolio through research that enables new opportunities, synergies, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Ideal candidates will have a demonstrably successful track record in grant funding, publications and postgraduate supervision in oral hard tissues biology (dentine, enamel, cement, bone) and related development, healing, and potential regeneration. Expertise in molecular biology techniques, tissue culture and stem cell research is essential.

The candidate is expected to develop their own area of research and forge new collaborations in clinical- and lab-related areas (such as cariology, implantology and materials) with internal and external partners including other academic institutions and industry.

Appointments will be made at either Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level; please specify the role you are applying for in the application.
