Job Description
WSP Land is seeking a talented Associate Land Consultant to join our teams in Birmingham / Manchester. This exciting role involves delivering land referencing, landowner engagement, consultation management, land access, formal consents, statutory orders, compensation agreements, and land acquisition in support of strategic infrastructure development projects across Ireland and the UK. We support high‑profile projects in Energy, Water, Road, Rail, and Local Authority sectors such as East West Rail, Heathrow, HS2, and many others. A key assignment is delivering the Development Consent Order (DCO) for East West Rail, a critical project enabling a fast, sustainable connection between Oxford and Cambridge, unlocking economic growth and supporting up to 100,000 new homes.
Responsibilities
* Lead the delivery of WSP Land business development across the UK electricity, highway, rail, water, telecoms, gas and renewable energy sectors to secure new projects and clients.
* Work closely with other WSP Disciplines, including Engineering, Engagement, Environmental and Planning teams, to exploit multidisciplinary opportunities and grow our business.
* Raise WSP Land’s profile in Birmingham / Manchester across public, target business sectors and academia.
* Act as a trusted advisor to clients and internal teams, engaging with client capture teams and Key Client Managers.
* Lead the writing of bids/tenders to secure opportunities.
* Manage resource strategy, including staff retention, succession planning and recruitment, ensuring the team has the necessary skills and resources.
* Lead at Project Director level, delivering projects on time, within budget and to the highest standards.
* Undertake project reviews to support risk and opportunity management, review task/project delivery to align with client needs, seek and act on client feedback.
* Provide technical direction on land projects, including statutory processes for acquiring land and land rights (Vesting Order, CPO, Motorway Order, Wayleaves, etc.).
* Contribute to positive team and project outcomes, promoting collective purpose and excellent teamwork with senior leadership.
* Promote WSP culture of health, safety & wellbeing, quality assurance, and data protection.
* Champion a core pillar across UK/Ireland (e.g., sector strategy, people development).
* Frequent travel to Ireland and UK sites.
Qualifications
* Experience managing and directing delivery of Land Services, including land referencing, Orders production, consent acquisition, consultation, and landowner engagement.
* Delivered a DCO project, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and coordination across multidisciplinary teams.
* Extensive experience with Linear Land Referencing projects, managing complex datasets and supporting legal and planning processes.
* Experience working with multi‑disciplinary teams across sectors and locations throughout all stages of scheme development.
* Proven ability to reduce land risk for clients and advise on land‑related matters through all project lifecycle stages.
* Experience with Public Inquiries/Oral Hearings and managing objections.
* Experience developing business and services with existing clients and securing new opportunities.
* Knowledge of target business market in Ireland.
* Experience in bid writing and approvals.
* Skilled in resource strategy and development.
* Knowledge of rural environment, property, communities and agricultural working practices.
* Strong engagement and negotiation skills with landowners and the public.
* Excellent communication and relationship building with senior clients and colleagues.
* Strong business and IT skills with adherence to Q&A, data protection, and H&S standards.
* Degree in Geography, Agriculture, Land and Estate Management or similar; chartership or professional membership advantageous.
* Ability to travel to site and remote locations.
