The Global Director of Photography is the senior editorial leader responsible for shaping the future of Reuters photojournalism and elevating coverage across all regions and key global themes. This role combines editorial excellence and strategic innovation to ensure Reuters Pictures remains the fastest, most trusted, and most impactful source of photojournalism across news, sports, and entertainment.
Role Overview
The Global Director of Photography will champion standards and ethics, informing how the Trust Principles are upheld in a world saturated with misinformation. The individual will shape global visual aesthetics, spearhead the adoption of new technologies and workflows, and ensure Reuters maintains a forward‑looking, competitive fleet of cameras and equipment. The role enhances coverage through strategic hiring, mentoring, and career development, drives training programs, and fosters an inclusive workplace. The Director will represent photography in strategic discussions on C2PA, AI innovation, and responsible integration in production workflows. As a brand ambassador, the Director will work with the Senior Editor of Wider Image and the Editor‑in‑Charge of photo production, represent Reuters at industry events, speaking engagements, and photo festivals, and champion Reuters’ editorial wins and innovations to clients and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
* Champion standards, ethics, and the Trust Principles across all visual content.
* Shape global visual aesthetics and lead adoption of new technologies and workflows.
* Strategically hire, mentor, and develop photographic talent, including stringers and freelancers.
* Design and deliver training programs to nurture photographic skill sets.
* Advocate for a competitive fleet of cameras and equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
* Represent Reuters photography in discussions on C2PA, AI innovation, and digital asset management.
* Act as an internal and external brand ambassador, representing Reuters at events and festivals.
Qualifications
* Prior leadership in a major global newsroom or wire service with a proven track‑record of award‑winning visual content.
* Strategic leadership ability with a history of influencing outcomes and guiding teams through collaboration.
* Deep understanding of ethical standards, visual storytelling, and industry best practices.
* Visionary leadership balancing craft excellence and business priorities.
* Experience integrating photography into cross‑format planning and storytelling.
* Expertise in camera technology and advocacy for the latest kit.
* Understanding of Reuters photography clients (internal and external) and ability to drive coverage to meet their needs.
* Ability to attract and retain top talent, including stringers and freelancers.
* Comfort working across diverse geographies and cultures.
* Familiarity with emerging technologies, AI, and content provenance standards.
* Experience with AI‑powered workflows, metadata tagging, and digital asset management systems.
