 
        
        The Trauma & Orthopaedic department at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Senior Knee Fellow. This is predominantly funded and sponsored through a successful grant application process and reward from Industry. This is a post FRCS Orth (or international equivalent for higher surgical training) fellowship designed for individuals who wish to gain advanced expertise in all aspects of soft tissue and knee arthroplasty with a view to a subsequent career as a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon.
The fellowship is based at a high-volume centre with a strong academic and teaching ethos, providing a rich environment for clinical and professional development. This fellowship will commence within the next 6 months depending on the successful applicant's availability. It is for up to 1 year assuming a successful mid-term (4 month) practice review.
You will work closely with 2 principle surgeons with over 25 years of Consultant experience in knee surgery, both soft tissue and arthroplasty (including robotics) and will be actively involved in surgical planning, operative procedures, research initiatives, and multidisciplinary case discussions. The role offers significant autonomy while ensuring robust supervision and mentorship to refine subspecialty skills and prepare for consultant practice.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Practice: Participate in outpatient clinics, acute knee injury clinic (in an MDT setting), ward rounds, and operating lists focused on periarticular knee osteotomy, primary UKR/TKR with robotics, with equal emphasis on sports-related arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures.
Surgical Training: Gain hands-on experience with exposure to advanced knee surgery techniques and robotics under consultant supervision along with some independent operating, open and arthroscopic surgery.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Contribute to case planning and management within MDT settings.
Teaching & Education: Support the education of junior trainees and medical students through bedside teaching and formal presentations.
Research: Engage in ongoing clinical research projects and audits. Opportunities exist to co-author peer-reviewed publications and present at national/international meetings.
On-Call Duties: There are no on call commitments with this post however there are some internal locum opportunities available.

Job responsibilities
We are supported by one Associate Specialist, Mr Rocha and a further Orthopaedic Consultant, Mr Saeed Ali. The other doctors/ANPs within the department include four SAS grades, five STRs, two Wrightington Fellows, six ANPs (Advanced Nurse Practitioners), one FY two, two FY ones, and five Junior Clinical Fellows.
The department has two wards for their patients, Fitzwilliam for Trauma and Rockingham ward for elective admissions. We have 20 ring-fenced beds in Rockingham ward for the elective patients.
The Rotherham Foundation Trust is part of a new surgical Orthopaedic centre of excellence - Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre. This is a collaborative project with local hospitals within the ICS and is part of our elective orthopaedic surgical capacity.
The department prides itself in providing the best teaching and training atmosphere for the Resident doctors. Two of our consultants have won the regional Trainer of the Year award. Mr Kocheta is the Director of Medical Education for the Trust, Mr Wembridge is an FRCS examiner and Mr Paniker is an examiner for the British Hand Diploma. Mr Halsey is the chair of the AO Hand and Wrist trauma courses, Mr Garneti initiated the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Courses (www.syoc.co.uk) and Mr Kocheta runs the upper limb trauma course (www.upperlimbtrauma.org). There is weekly Thursday lunchtime teaching supported by consultants.
The soft tissue knee unit performs uni-compartment knee replacements as day surgery procedures. The department were double finalists for the HSJ 2019 awards for the work done to reduce mortality in patients with NOF fractures.
The department works closely with the MSK triage services to improve the referral pathways for our patients. We have also recently successfully implemented the virtual fracture clinic in our department.
The Post
The primary clinical responsibilities of the postholder are:
to assist in the provisions of a Consultant led trauma and orthopaedic service for in-patients, day cases and out-patients, with continuing responsibility for the patients and their care and for the proper functioning of the department;
to carry out teaching duties as required and, in particular, to take an active part in the education programme of junior medical staff;
participate fully in audit and the implementation of Clinical Governance and CNST,
deputise for absent colleagues and offer advice and guidance in addition to overseeing the day-to-day management of the department,
be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties, as are essential for continuity of patient care.
Ensure Trust Information Governance policy and best practice is followed (including confidentiality and data quality) to ensure data quality is maximised and confidentiality of information is maintained and applied to all data recorded, utilised and reported on.
The Consultant with whom you are teamed will have full continuing responsibility for the care of patients and the provision of orthopaedic treatment, which is relevant to their medical condition whilst in hospital. This may require the provision of advice and assistance to / from colleagues in other specialties and the proper delegation of the treatment of patients under his/her care to junior staff, which should include an element of training and education. The post holder will be expected and encouraged by the Consultant to carry out any research activities, which are an inherent part of normal clinical duties.

Person Specification
Qualifications
 * Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC
 * MBBS Medical Degree
 * Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies or equivalent in line with GMC standards of Good Medical Practice
 * A requirement for FRCS (Orth) or International Equivalent for higher surgical training as well as a minimum of 6 months middle grade attachment with a Consultant(s) in knee surgery that can be referenced if requested
Clinical skills
