Senior paediatric audiologist

We provide a comprehensive Paediatric Audiology service including assessing babies referred from the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, the behavioural and objective assessment of children of all ages and the habilitation of children with hearing loss. We also provide a specialist bone conduction hearing implant (BCHI) service. The Paediatric Audiology Service sits alongside Adult Audiology Services and the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme.

The department is a training centre for Scientist Training Programme through the National School of Healthcare Science. The post holder will be a Training Officer for trainees undertaking the Scientist Training Programme, providing clinical supervision, training and mentoring to junior members of staff and trainee's. It is therefore, imperative for the post holder to continue maintaining professional development.

The post holder will be expected to demonstrate a positive and caring attitude that is patient-centred and maintain a calm and organised approach when working under pressure. They will work in an environment that undergoes constant challenges, and will need to adapt to service needs within the clinical environment ensuring that all aspects of the service are developed and delivered to high standards.

Main duties of the job

* To provide a diagnostic service for the Paediatric Audiology Department both on the hospital site and in the community, performing diagnostic Audiological assessment mainly on neonates and children. To include children with learning disabilities, challenging behaviour and additional disabilities or special needs.
* To provide aural habilitation for babies and children which includes providing counselling to distressed parents/guardians about their children's hearing loss and associated problems, and to have the ability to make decisions about the most appropriate course of treatment for the patient in their care.
* To assist in the day to day running of the Paediatric Audiology Service. To include maintenance of highest levels of health and safety.
* To be involved in the education and training requirements of the department and provide clinical supervision of trainee and assistant audiologists in Audiological techniques. To offer support to trainees studying for professional exams and existing staff.
* To carry out general duties and maintain a programme of continuing professional development working towards high levels of professional competence.
* To be involved in IQIPS accreditation process and service development.

Person Specification


Education/ Qualifications

* BSc in Clinical Audiology or equivalent qualification & level of knowledge
* State registration as Clinical Physiologist in Audiology with RCCP or equivalent, HCPC
* Membership of BAA, BSA (British Society of Audiologists)


Experience

* Experience of working with children
* Knowledge of child development
* Knowledge of audit and research
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Experience of working in the community setting


Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

* Analytical and Judgmental Skills
* Skills for assessing and interpreting test results
* Ability to apply information to the use and application of appropriate hearing aids for Paediatric users
* Excellent interpersonal skills
* Daily communication and interaction with colleagues using tact, empathy and motivation
* Evidence of teaching skills
