Clinical Support Worker and Administrator B3
The Clinical Investigation Unit, Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Hospital Trustis seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Support Worker & Administrator to join our friendly and dedicated team. This is a varied role combining patient-facing clinical support with essential administrative responsibilities to ensure the smooth running of endocrine dynamic function tests and the lipid clinics.
Working alongside Chemical Pathologists, Specialist Nurses and operational staff, you will play a key part in delivering safe, effective and compassionate care. The role involves supporting patients during their clinic visits, assisting with delegated clinical tasks, and maintaining accurate records and clinic schedules.
Main duties of the job
Key responsibilities include:
Monitoring and recording patient vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation)
Recognising and promptly reporting changes in patient condition
Handling and preparing biological samples in line with departmental safety policies
Performing point-of-care testing following SOPs
Maintaining and updating patient files and clinic documentation
Booking, cancelling and amending appointments on Trust systems
Creating and managing clinic schedules, including adding and cancelling slots
Liaising with other hospitals to retrieve blood test results
Ensuring equipment is clean, safe and appropriately maintained
Supporting stock rotation, ordering and general housekeeping
Providing excellent communication and customer service to patients and staff

Clinical and Technical: Is proficient to monitor and record vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, pulse, temperature,oxygen saturation), body weight, height and BMI.Recognise and promptly report changes in patient condition to a registered professional. Is proficient in performing Point of Care sample testing and be able to make a judgementsto meet the requirements of the clinical investigation unit assessments, typically analysingsamples and following the appropriate SOP. Ensures that collected clinical samples at the unit are correctly packaged for transportationto the laboratory in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Pathology Department. Is proficient in the use, maintenance and quality control procedures of the departmentalequipment. Works to ensure that departmental performance targets are met by continually assessingpriority of own work; taking into account individual needs of the patient. To monitor patientdemand levels in the clinics. Is fully conversant with and works to relevant departmental policies and Standard OperatingProcedures, ensuring that personal performance complies with ISO standards (Internationalstandards organisation). Provides support to members of staff, and encourage best practice. Maintain and update patient files as and when required.
Contact patients for rebooking and appointment scheduling, ensuring correct printappointment cards, letters, and picklists for clinics and sent in a timely manner. Create and manage clinic schedules, including adding slots and cancelling clinics on thedepartmental/trusts IT systems. Liaise with other hospitals to retrieve blood test results following the appropriate performanceindicators.Information Technology: Is able to use the departmental /Trusts computer system to check emails and participate ine-learning To view and move between several open applications simultaneously e.g., site specific ICEapplications, EPR, printing screens Is able to book/cancel and change appointments as necessary. To determine/select blood request for an individual patient and print relevant/correct bloodrequest forms To determine urgency of appointments and select appropriate timescale for appointments. Escalate functionality issues to the operational manager.
The work requires flexible approach to hours of employment. The department can operate from 7:00am 6:00pm Monday to Friday.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Basic numeracy and language skills
* Is able to undertake an initial 6 week training programme running concurrently over five days per week
* Educated to A Level or NVQ 3 or relevant experience
* Evidence of acceptable equivalent to QCF or higher
* Aspirations to achieve relevant QCF
Knowledge and Experience
* Knowledge of relevant Medical Terminology
* To demonstrate the ability to collect blood samples correctly
* Previous phlebotomy/administrator experience in a healthcare environment
* The post holder will be assessed on their practical skills and knowledge base and must have reached competency equivalent to QCF Level 3 Unit 4223/340 Obtain A Venous Blood Sample(HSC 3053).
* Be able to guide and supervise less experienced members of staff
* Supports learning and development of self and others, with a willingness to learn, retain information and engage in any necessary induction and training programmes.
