MMA Welder Opportunities
As an MMA Welder, you’ll have a role that’s genuinely out of the ordinary. These opportunities place you at the centre of major shipbuilding, submarine, and infrastructure projects.
You’ll use your expertise to support the fabrication, repair, and structural integrity of naval vessels and heavy engineering assets.
What you’ll do:
1. Apply Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding to a variety of heavy‑duty marine and structural components
2. Work on submarines, surface ships, dockside infrastructure, and controlled factory environments
3. Operate welding and some fabrication equipment to consistently high standards
4. Read and interpret complex engineering drawings from a welding perspective, procedures, and technical specifications
5. Work closely with multi‑disciplinary engineering teams to meet tight safety and performance targets
What you’ll need:
6. Strong capability in MMA/Stick welding on heavy plate, structural steel, or marine-grade materials
7. Experience working in shipbuilding, ship repair, infrastructure, or large-scale construction environments
8. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical instructions
9. Confident use of welding sets, fabrication tools, and general workshop equipment
10. Marine engineering background or experience on Royal Navy or commercial vessels - Desirable
11. Time-served trade apprenticeship in welding, fabrication, marine, or naval engineering - Desirable
12. Indentured Apprenticeship relevant to welding - Desirable
13. Level 3 Engineering or Modern Apprenticeship - Desirable
14. Level 2 Engineering qualification supported by significant practical experience - Desirable

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
