Overview
Support required by Personal Assistant for a 73 year old male. DBS is required before you can start employment.
2 x Personal Assistants to assist with tasks listed below. Duties include supporting the individual to anticipate care needs, assist with transfers, personal care and hygiene, continence care, nutrition, safety, and social engagement. Driver preferred: use of the clients mobility car to attend medical appointments. DPS clearance is required for all carers.
Responsibilities
* Support to anticipate care needs; assist the individual who may have difficulty communicating due to brain injury and hearing impairment. Ensure he is wearing hearing aids when required.
* Assist with transfers and regular repositioning to support comfort and pressure relief; adhere to the Occupational Therapist handling plan.
* Provide support with personal care and hygiene (wash/shower/bath/grooming and oral care); prompt and encourage during tasks.
* Provide continence care and hygiene; monitor catheter blockages and report concerns. The individual is doubly incontinent, wears pads, and has a catheter in situ; may require a wash/bath during continence care.
* Support with pressure care/relief/repositioning; monitor pressure areas and report concerns to relevant professionals.
* Support to meet all nutritional needs and fluids. The individual eats a normal diet cut into small pieces; he can eat independently but may require feeding when tired or unwell. Monitor intake to ensure an adequate diet; user may use a straw for drinking.
* Provide general supervision to ensure safety; the individual cannot be left alone.
* Use of hoists will be needed at times.
* Driver preferred: use of the clients mobility car to attend medical appointments. If not driving the client, carers will not use their own transport; they may drive the company van with insurance covered by the Motability scheme if criteria are met.
* All carers appointed must be prepared to apply for/have DPS clearance. Pending DPS clearance, all care will be undertaken under the supervision of the employer in line with social worker guidelines.
Additional duties
1. Supporting the employer with encouragement in gaining independence.
2. Enabling the employer to interact socially in their community.
3. Providing support to the employer whilst shopping and attending activities of interest.
4. Supporting the employer to develop independent living skills.
5. Providing companionship in the employer’s home, including engaging in conversation and social interaction.
6. Encouraging the employer to attend appointments.
7. Ensuring the employer s safety at all times during working hours.
8. Carrying out any other reasonable tasks requested by the employer during working hours.
9. Ensuring compliance with the Data Protection Act.
10. Being responsible for contacting the GP, Social Worker or Local Authority should the employer need medical assistance.
Relationships and Communication
Ability to develop supportive, caring relationships with the employer; undertake duties in a friendly and helpful manner; able to contact people on behalf of the employer when necessary.
Job Working Environment
Working in the employer’s home and supporting access to facilities and community activities.
Person Specification – Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills

4. Good local knowledge of the area where the employer lives.
5. Good time-keeping and flexibility around working patterns and duties as determined by the employers requirements.

7. Good communicator able to talk to people on behalf of the employer when required.
8. Ability to develop long-term supportive and consistent relationships with employers.
9. A full, clean driving licence and use of a car is likely to be required (depends on employer needs and walking distance).
10. Prepared to have business use on vehicle insurance to use the vehicle during work hours.
11. Be prepared to undergo training to best meet the employers needs.
12. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be undertaken on acceptance of the job offer.
