Lead Data Engineer (Consultant)
Join Kainos as a Lead Data Engineer and shape the future of data-driven solutions. In this role you will design, develop, and deliver scalable data processing and persistence components while providing strong technical leadership to a high-performing agile team.
Responsibilities
* Lead the development of whole components or subsystems, integrating design, code, testing, and defect resolution.
* Use open source and commercial platforms for hands‑on design and development.
* Define and enforce development best practice, coaching team members for consistency.
* Collaborate with project architects to address non‑functional needs of ELT pipelines, ensuring robustness and performance.
* Take ownership of unit and integration testing standards and execution.
* Lead troubleshooting, tuning, and integration of software products.
* Work with Operations teams to ensure operational readiness of application software.
* Collaborate with Security Architects and accreditors to meet legal and security compliance requirements.
* Advise customers and managers on effort estimates and technical implications of user stories.
* Contribute to technical proposals as part of the sales process.
* Manage, coach, and develop a small team, focusing on performance management and career development.
Minimum (Essential) Requirements
* Experience leading engineering teams in building data‑intensive system components.
* Apply design patterns, coding standards, and operational readiness practices (automation, deployment).
* Proficient in Java, Scala, or Python.
* Experience with data‑processing platforms such as Informatica, Azure Databricks, or similar ETL tools.
* Expertise in SQL or SQL extensions for analytical use.
* Strong understanding of distributed data stores and processing frameworks.
* Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills.
* Proficient in designing analytical and operational data models.
* Strong interest in AI technologies.
Desirable
* Experience with Data Warehouse methods and techniques.
* Proactive sharing of data practices.
* AWS/Azure/GCP certification in data services.
* Continuous improvement mindset and best‑practice sharing.
* Active participation in development and technology communities.
* Practical experience with AI technologies, tools, processes, and delivery.
