Job Overview

The Diabetes Clinical Lead will provide strategic and clinical leadership, alongside the Diabetes Service Group, leading on pan Health Board strategic development and operational delivery of the secondary Diabetes service, working closely with regional tertiary Diabetes pathway development. They will be responsible for the development and delivery of clinical diabetes services within the Health Boards financial, workforce, operational targets and strategic objectives and accountable for overseeing clinical governance and quality. Establishing effective working relationships across clinical and professional groups will be key to the success of the role, including participation in decision‑making, target setting, workforce and job planning, and appraisal and revalidation processes. The Diabetes Clinical Lead will be a highly visible, proactive and accessible clinical leader, acting as a role model and clinical resource, and ensuring the sustained delivery of high standards of clinical care, to clinicians, patients and the public. The post holder will work in partnership with the service delivery group, within the Community & Integrated Medicine Care Group. The role will require time equivalent to one job planned session.


Main Duties of the Job

* Provide effective, innovative, strategic and clinical leadership to deliver sustainable key cardiology service improvements.
* Drive and oversee system wide service transformation and realignment via strategic planning, performance and value‑based outcomes.
* Work to deliver clinical excellence and improve health outcomes through cardiology service improvements.
* Contribute senior clinical input to the modernisation and development of the specialty area at board/executive level – locally and nationally.
* Through strategic partnerships support in developing a culture that embeds Value Based Health Care ensuring equity and inclusion.
* Deliver clinical innovation, research integration and promote digital healthcare.
* Participate in regular audit meetings and postgraduate teaching sessions held by the appropriate department.
* Participate in the development of teaching, training and research within the organisation.
* Promote evidence-based clinical practice.
* Actively participate in audit and research.
* Work with management teams in the efficient running of the service ensuring financial compliance as applicable.
* Organise and attend business performance meetings for diabetes services.
* Contribute to external reviews.
* Work with key stakeholders to develop long‑term diabetes services plan and address major operational issues.
* Support continuous improvement of diabetes services.
* Manage staffing and clinical resources effectively.


Working for our organisation

* Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybus General in Haverfordwest.
* Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire.
* 48 general practices (four of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres.
* Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services.
* Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.
