Specialist Grade in Psychiatry for Adults with LD

As a Specialist Grade Doctor, you will provide expert community psychiatric care to people with intellectual disabilities who reside within the county of Pembrokeshire. The service has already implemented Dementia, Epilepsy, and PMLD pathways. You will lead clinical care, teaching activities and contribute to service development and governance.

This post is ideal for doctors seeking to consolidate their experience or progress within Non‑Consultant Career Grades. You'll be supported through the Portfolio Pathway to gain Specialist Registration and advance your career in a structured, nurturing environment.


Main duties of the job

* Ensure the provision and delivery of a first‑class clinical service.
* Provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.
* Sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate.
* Undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board's procedures and operating policies.
* Conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Health Board's service plans.
* Contribute to the Consultant on‑call rota (1 in 14 rota).
* Maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty or the Health Board.
* Provide core clinical expertise in the field of Intellectual Disability Psychiatry.
* Run a specialty service and lead a multidisciplinary team.
* Support and train multidisciplinary teams.
* Participate in continuing professional development, including audit.
* Maintain professional development for revalidation.
* Take a teaching and training role for medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
* Supervise junior and middle grade medical staff.
* Undertake regular multi‑disciplinary clinical audit and provide evidence‑based medicine.


Qualifications and Knowledge

* Full registration and a license to practice with the General Medical Council.
* Valid Certified Advanced Life Support (ATLS / ALS / PALS).
* Section 12 approval.
* Appointed candidate will be expected to obtain AC Approved Clinician status within 12 months of starting.
* AC Approved Clinician status by commencement.


Clinical Experience

* Minimum of 12 years’ experience since primary medical qualification with at least 6 years within the specialty area (continuous or in aggregate).
* Evidence of leading a team.
* Demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
* Experience of change management, quality improvement or audit.
* Previous experience working in the NHS.


Teaching

* Critical assessment of learning requirements for self and others.
* Organise programmes and teaching for all staff groups.
* Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.
* Higher teaching qualification.


Research and Scholarship

* Knowledge of current research and best practice in the specialty area.
* Evidence of keeping up to date with current research and best practice.
* Use clinical guidelines appropriately.
* Communicate and interpret research evidence in a meaningful way.
* Engage in research.


Clinical Governance

* Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding of its role in improving practice.
* Engagement in annual job planning/appraisal review process.
* Lead a clinical audit (or quality improvement project).
* Knowledge of risk management.


Safeguarding

* Knowledge of safeguarding requirements and take appropriate responsibility.
* Application of equality and diversity legislation.


Other

* Welsh speaker (Level 1).

* Work flexibly.
* Remain calm under pressure.
* Lead and supervise a team.
* Excellent interpersonal and team‑working skills.
