Overview of Role
The Estimator will support the Commercial and Pre‑Construction teams by leading and contributing to estimating activities across JPD's project portfolio. The role is responsible for producing accurate, competitive, and commercially sound cost plans and tender submissions, supporting the business in securing profitable work aligned with strategic objectives. Working closely with the Pre‑Construction Director, the Estimator will play a key role in ensuring tenders are robust, well‑governed, and reflective of current market conditions. The role also supports early commercial planning, value engineering, and adherence to JPD best‑practice estimating and financial reporting processes, contributing to continuous improvement across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Pre‑Construction
* Lead and support the preparation of detailed estimates for tenders and negotiated projects
* Carry out accurate quantity take‑offs and measurements from drawings and specifications
* Prepare tender lists, pricing schedules, and complete tender documentation
* Analyse Sub‑Contractor and supplier tender returns and produce clear cost comparisons
* Lead internal tender reviews and coordinate required resources to meet submission deadlines
* Develop the final JPD tender price, ensuring full commercial coverage of risk and opportunity
* Support value engineering and alternative design solutions where appropriate
Commercial & Financial Support
* Support accurate early‑stage cost planning to assist in achieving targeted profit margins
* Assist with project cost forecasting and handover from pre‑construction to delivery teams
* Provide commercial input to support financial governance and reporting
* Attend internal commercial and tender review meetings as required
* Ensure estimating outputs align with internal commercial policies and best‑practice procedures
Sub‑Contract Procurement (Pre‑Construction Focus)
* Compile Sub‑Contractor tender packages and scopes of works
* Source and assess suitable Sub‑Contractors and suppliers for tendering
* Produce cost reconciliation and comparison reports to inform supply chain selection
* Assist in securing competitive rates and favourable commercial termsSupport the preparation of Sub‑Contract and purchase order documentation
Procurement & Estimating Systems
* Produce and maintain work package pricing schedules
* Source material and supply prices, monitoring market conditions and inflationary trends
* Investigate value engineering opportunities and alternative procurement strategies
* Ensure accurate use of estimating software and correct cost coding within estimates
Skills & Experience
Essential
* 5+ years' experience in an estimating role within UK construction
* Strong commercial knowledge
* Experience leading tender estimates
* Proficiency with MS Office, Evalu8 Measurement Software (or similar platforms)
* Strong analytical, numerical, and organisational skills with attention to detail
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to manage multiple workstreams concurrently and meet reporting deadlines
* Experience working on residential, commercial, and mixed‑use projects
Preferred
* Construction related Degree
* Strong understanding of JCT contract forms and UK construction practices
* Experience with document control / CDE platforms and modern quality management systems
