Overview
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern: Aseptic Pharmacist
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The Role
The Department will have its organisational base in Acute Services and covers the entire NHS GG&C system, including CHCPs, Mental Health Partnership, Health Improvement Network and the NHS Board. The post is based at one of the mental health sites (Gartnavel Royal, Leverndale or Stobhill).
Grade: Band 6
Location: Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
Hours: Permanent, Full‑time 36 hours per week (from April 2026)
Key Responsibilities
* Clinical responsibilities
* Provide pharmaceutical care on wards, including taking drug histories, creating care plans, monitoring treatment, and ensuring safe, cost‑effective prescribing.
* Participate in ward rounds and MDT meetings, offering advice on drug choice, interactions, side effects, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
* Ensure accurate discharge prescriptions, continuity of care with primary care teams, and adherence to national/local guidelines.
* Support clinical governance, formulary management, patient education, and monitoring of medicines use.
* Take professional responsibility for accurate and legal prescribing documentation.
* Dispensing responsibilities
* Deliver inpatient and outpatient dispensing services in line with departmental protocols.
* Professionally check and release discharge prescriptions, ensuring appropriate communication with primary care.
* Contribute to extemporaneous dispensing and preparation of prepacks.
* Medicines information responsibilities
* Provide high‑quality, evidence‑based medicines information, using structured search strategies and critical evaluation.
* Manage and prioritise enquiry workloads, maintain accurate records, and use enquiry management systems appropriately.
* Participate in quality assurance, peer review, and national reporting of errors or critical incidents.
* Education and training
* Complete and document the postregistration foundation training programme.
* Attend CPD activities, training sessions, and peer review meetings.
* Support the training and supervision of students, preregistration pharmacists, technicians, and other healthcare staff.
* Maintain CPD in line with Royal Pharmaceutical Society expectations.
* General duties
* Contribute to medicines use evaluations, audits, research, and service development.
* Manage risks related to medicines, ensuring compliance with legislation (e.g., Medicines Act, Misuse of Drugs Act, COSHH).
* Maintain security and safe storage of medicines, including controlled drug checks.
* Write or review IV monographs, support safe working procedures, and deputise for senior staff when required.
* Participate in weekend, public holiday, and emergency duty rotas.
Qualifications and Experience
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
* Master’s degree in pharmacy or equivalent is essential
* Foundation training year completed, and examination passed is essential
* Be willing to undertake the post‑registration foundation training programme
