What is a Software Engineer Apprentice?

Software Engineers at Renishaw work to develop and create computer software and systems which help to operate our products. Our Software Apprentices follow a structured 4-year programme which includes studying for both a Level 6 Digital and Technology Solutions Professional Apprenticeship and BSc Digital and Technology Solutions, specialising in Software Engineering. This involves working full-time at Renishaw with 20% of that time spent on a mixture of studying for your degree and off the job learning.

Successful completion of the degree/apprenticeship culminates in a full-time role as a Software Engineer within one of our product development teams.

What will I do?

Year 1 of the apprenticeship is initially spent in a dedicated training programme which is designed to build; core programming skills; general software design techniques (such as object-oriented programming and design methodologies); the Microsoft development environment; project management and software development lifecycles including the Agile processes, testing and deployment, and distributed development (remote working).

The remaining years will be spent in placements within Renishaw’s product teams where you will work on real projects and products, with the aim of entering a specialist area of industry within the company. You are likely to experience at least three different placements giving you a varied insight into professional software development and the different market sectors that Renishaw operates in.

What qualification will I achieve?

You will study towards a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions via blended learning with the University of Exeter. The programme includes:

5. Three residential stays of approximately one week duration, held at the University. This will include lectures, tutorials and workshop time, as well as opportunity to meet peers from other employers. Please note, the format of delivery may change and is subject to Covid-19 restrictions at the time.

6. Online learning to be undertaken during the working week (typically up to one day per week), including web seminars, interactive activities, reading and assessments.

7. Reflective practice, assessing project work undertaken in the workplace.

The University of Exeter is a Russell Group university and is one of the fastest-rising, fastest-growing universities in the UK.
