About Bhuku Ltd
Bhuku Ltd is an education and training provider working across prisons in the UK, delivering innovative, inclusive, and outcomes-driven programmes. Our focus is on equipping learners with skills that enhance confidence, build employability, and support rehabilitation.
About the Programme – Read to Succeed
This role delivers Read to Succeed, Bhuku's literacy support programme at HMP Guys Marsh. The course is designed for men with low literacy levels, including those with English as a second language and learners with additional support needs.
The programme helps learners to:
* Improve reading, writing, phonics, spelling, and comprehension.
* Develop confidence in sentence writing, grammar, and vocabulary.
* Apply literacy skills to real-life tasks (forms, timetables, menus, letters).
* Build confidence and resilience for progression into functional skills, vocational training, or employability programmes.
* Take part in one-to-one and small group sessions supported by tailored resources and in-cell packs.
The programme is delivered in rolling cohorts with ongoing learner intake, ensuring all participants receive consistent, structured support.
The Role
As Literacy Tutor, you will be responsible for:
* Delivering high-quality one-to-one and small group literacy sessions Monday–Thursday.
* Teaching phonics, spelling, grammar, sentence writing, and comprehension using multi-sensory methods.
* Designing and delivering practical literacy sessions linked to resettlement skills.
* Supporting learners with low confidence, ESOL needs, or neurodiverse profiles.
* Providing tailored in-cell learning packs to ensure continuity.
* Monitoring learner progress through assessments, journals, and reflective activities.
* Recording attendance and outcomes using PNOMIS and Bhuku reporting systems.
* Working collaboratively with prison staff, peer mentors, and other partners.
* Celebrating learner achievements through certificates and recognition events.
This is a hands-on role, requiring patience, creativity, and resilience to help learners achieve significant progress, sometimes from a very low starting point.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
* Experienced in teaching, training, or mentoring adults with low literacy.
* Confident working with learners who may have ESOL, SEND, or neurodiverse needs.
* Skilled in adapting content for different learning levels and styles.
* Motivated, flexible, and able to manage delivery in a secure prison environment.
* Committed to trauma-informed and inclusive practice.
Experience of prison education is an advantage but not essential – full induction and support will be provided.
What We Offer
* £13 per hour, paid monthly.
* Fixed-term contract for 7 months with potential for future roles.
* Full induction and 5 days' paid CPD training covering safeguarding, EDI, and trauma-informed practice.
* Ongoing support from Bhuku's programme manager, quality assurance lead, and content team.
