About Smithers Medical Device Testing (MDT)

Smithers Medical Device Testing (MDT) is a global leader in testing, inspection, and compliance, supporting medical device, pharmaceutical, and combination product manufacturers worldwide.

Our work underpins products that improve and save lives. That means the data behind every decision must be accurate, traceable, validated, and regulator-ready.

As Smithers continues to invest in intelligent systems and advanced analytics, we are applying artificial intelligence not as a buzzword — but as a practical, deployable capability that enhances laboratory science, analytical workflows, and testing protocols at scale.

At MDT, AI is built where it actually matters.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an AI Specialist to support the development and implementation of intelligent AI agents and machine learning models that enhance analytical workflows, laboratory systems, and medical device testing environments.

This is a hands‑on, applied AI role working directly with scientists, engineers, IT, and quality teams. You’ll help bring AI into regulated laboratory environments, ensuring models are robust, explainable, validated, and ready for real‑world use.

This role is ideal for an early‑career or developing AI professional who wants to:

* Work on real AI systems, not just proofs of concept
* Gain exposure to regulated AI, validation, and compliance
* Apply machine learning in chemistry, medical devices, and combination products
* Build AI solutions that are actually deployed and trusted

What You’ll Be Doing

Applied AI & Intelligent Agent Development

* Support the design and development of AI and machine learning models for:
o Data interpretation
o Anomaly detection
o Predictive analytics
* Assist in developing intelligent agents to support:
o Experimental planning
o Documentation automation
o Analytical workflow optimisation

Laboratory Systems & Integration

* Support the integration of AI solutions with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and related laboratory software
* Ensure data integrity, formatting, traceability, and system interoperability
* Collaborate closely with IT to support secure and scalable AI implementation

Validation, Quality & Compliance

* Participate in model testing and validation activities to verify performance against defined criteria
* Support adherence to regulatory, quality, and documentation standards
* Assist with quality audits and accreditation requirements

Cross-Functional Collaboration

* Work with chemists, engineers, scientists, quality, and IT teams
* Translate AI capability into practical laboratory and business outcomes

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

* Create and maintain clear, structured documentation covering:
o Model configurations
o Experiments
o Implementation approaches
* Support internal review, adoption, and continuous improvement

What We’re Looking For

Essential

* Familiarity with Python and modern AI frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
* Understanding of machine learning principles, data analysis, and model evaluation
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to analyse data, interpret trends, and explain findings clearly
* Comfortable working in structured or regulated environments

Education & Certifications

* Currently enrolled in (or recently completed) a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in:
o Computer Science
o Artificial Intelligence
o Data Science
o Or a related technical discipline
* Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900)
* Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900)
* CompTIA Security+

Desirable

* Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102)
* Exposure to:
o Laboratory environments
o LIMS platforms
o Medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or regulated industries
* Interest in agent‑based modelling and applied AI systems

Skills That Will Set You Apart

* Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem‑solving ability
* Confidence interpreting statistical outputs, ratios, trends, and graphs
* High attention to detail and documentation quality
* Ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical teams
* Curiosity, adaptability, and a desire to learn in a fast‑evolving AI landscape

Flexibility & Travel

* Willingness to travel nationally and internationally as required
* Flexible approach to working hours to meet business and project needs

Why Join Smithers MDT?

At Smithers Medical Device Testing, you’ll apply artificial intelligence in real laboratory and medical device environments, not experimental side projects or disconnected proofs of concept. This role offers rare exposure to regulated AI, where validation, compliance, and data integrity genuinely matter, giving you experience few AI roles can match. You’ll work alongside scientists, engineers, and quality experts, translating advanced AI capability into systems that are trusted, deployed, and used to support life‑impacting decisions. As part of a global organisation investing seriously in intelligent systems and future capability, you’ll help shape how AI is responsibly embedded into science, testing, and real‑world decision making — building AI where it truly matters.
