Job purpose The primary role is to lead and be responsible for delivery of high quality competitive passive restraints commodities, from early strategic planning through specification, sourcing, development, validation and programme delivery, ensuring compatibility with all system attributes and performance targets. Success will require strong technical experience within vehicle safety restraints, coupled with a strong focus on internal stakeholder and supplier management to deliver appropriate solutions within the quality, cost and timing constraints identified by the programmes. This role will report directly into the Restraints & Safety Electronics SET and be accountable to multiple programme teams. Key duties and responsibilities Lead engineering activities related to Restraints Component / System / Feature ownership and delivery Leadership of commodity strategy to meet financial targets, quality of the delivered components and adherence to programme timing. Coordinate and manage failure mode prevention activities (DFMEA, QHR, Lessons Learned, Design Manuals) Provide surface compatibility (where applicable) feedback as appropriate to concept & design teams Lead the design of commodities to achieve functional targets, and agree the validation plans through virtual or physical project phases, including design of bucks and rigs for FMA Lead Functional Safety activities (where applicable) with the supplier in accordance with relevant gateway deliverables Lead cross functional design reviews Manage virtual and physical build phases, and resolution of issues Manage and distribute creation of 3D and 2D CAD models (including GD&T) using both internal and external resource, including the creation of archetypes across multiple platforms Liaise directly with potential and existing suppliers to understand manufacturing feasibility Benchmark competitors, understand best in class solutions, and present findings to senior management. Responsible and accountable as the releasing engineer, managing data within PLM system Problem solving skills and ability to form contingency plans to overcome programme challenges on cost / timing / DVP delivery, including complex route cause analysis Be prepared to and be confident in presenting technical information to all levels up to and including CTO. Investigate and support issue resolution during prototype, pre-production, and production phases of the vehicle life cycle. Create and manage high quality engineering documents, including FESO documentation, ensuring cross functional alignment during the product creation process Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the team, proactively identifying ideas, driving team engagement, and implementing agreed robustness changes Experience and qualifications Essential experience Minimum of 5 years’ experience in project engineering working within Safety Restraint Systems Knowledge of L&C requirements and working knowledge of relevant wider requirements Degree qualified desirable or exceptional equivalent experience Extensive experience of Product Creation/ Engineering function product delivery from concept to launch within an Engineering context Knowledge of automotive development systems e.g. specification, releasing, concerns, containments, gateways and sign off documentation. Extensive knowledge of the manufacturing processes to create components, e.g. metal pressings, castings, extrusions as appropriate to owned commodities Comprehensive knowledge of the application and interpretation of CAE analysis to drive design. Experience of material selection, gap & flush analysis, best in class fixing methodology to achieve perceived quality targets, and working to design guidelines and targets Quality focused: experienced in DFMEA methodology, virtual builds, QHR’s Attention to detail and decision making Data manipulation Enthusiastic – can motivate team Passionate about product and programme delivery Resilient to changes in direction Communicate with impact both verbally and written Additional requirements The post-holder will be required to travel to other Aston Martin sites, so a valid, current driving license is essential.
