Purpose of the role
BBC Learning English is the award‑winning, English language teaching arm of the BBC World Service. The department primarily creates digital content for English language learners on its web, app and social media platforms and via podcasts. It also syndicates content to partner networks including social media, web, radio and TV. We now aim to increase reach to our young, underserved audiences by broadening our ELT offer to our China partners and Mandarin‑speaking audiences in general.
Key responsibilities and impact
* Originate English language teaching content and re‑version existing department content and/or BBC content for web and social platforms, including image, text, video, audio and interactive elements.
* Write and teach grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and other related ELT content in a simple and engaging way for different platforms and for Chinese and global audiences with varying levels of English.
* Assume full responsibility for the educational and journalistic accuracy of all materials produced.
* Be involved in every stage of the production process, from scoping ideas to providing guidance, completing administrative paperwork and ensuring timely delivery.
* Source contributors, interviewees, language learners and experts, and develop realistic alternative strategies when editorial or educational challenges arise.
* Ensure all content adheres to BBC Editorial Guidelines and relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements, escalating when necessary.
* Monitor growth of the Learning English and associated ELT websites, analysing usage patterns, identifying expansion opportunities and building audience reach.
* Direct a Journalism Coordinator in preparing programme material for which the role is responsible.
Skills and experience
* Native‑level proficiency in Mandarin (Simplified) in all forms.
* Excellent working knowledge of English in all forms.
* First‑class translation skills from English to Mandarin.
* Recent experience creating or re‑versioning English‑language teaching materials for a Mandarin‑speaking audience, both in a school environment and for self‑study audiences across media platforms.
* Enthusiasm for and deep understanding of digital production and content, particularly for English language teaching.
* Experience creating ELT content for Chinese social media platforms.
* Strong technical knowledge of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro for image, audio and video editing.
