Job Overview
We recruit people based on their values and believe that their lived experience is an advantage. We seek potential, not perfection, and value diversity to reflect the communities we serve. We employ caring individuals who act with integrity and possess the right skills, enabling us to provide high-quality care and support for those with mental health challenges, learning disabilities, and neurodiversity. Our recruitment approach is values-based, supported by attached documents including the Recruitment Profile, Benefits, and Candidate's Guide.
We host the trainee mental health/learning disability nurse apprenticeship role, which complements our existing registered nursing and allied health professional roles. Once qualified, the nursing associate role can serve as a pathway to becoming a registered nurse via an additional apprenticeship.
Main Duties
This is an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Registered Nurse (MH/LD) Apprenticeship within LYPFT, supported by a high-quality training program in partnership with a leading provider. The apprenticeship offers valuable experience and a foundation for future careers, with the potential for a permanent position upon successful completion.
You will be supported throughout your learning and role development by our Apprenticeship team and your manager. The role requires GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English at Level 2, and existing associate Foundation Degree credits. During the apprenticeship, you will be a band 4 Trainee Registered Nurse, with responsibilities expected to be fulfilled fully by the end of training. A development plan will be established to guide your progress. Upon completion, you will advance to band 5 Registered Nurse (Mental Health/Learning Disability).
About Us
Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of mental health and learning disability services in Leeds, with specialized inpatient services in York and across the country. As a teaching trust with strong academic links, we are a hub for teaching, research, and development.
Benefits include employee wellbeing support, 27-33 days annual leave, flexible and remote working, the NHS Pension Scheme (with LYPFT contributing 20.6%), career development opportunities, training, and exclusive discounts such as Blue Light Card, Health Service Discounts, and NHS offers.
Eligibility
You must have been a UK resident for at least 3 years and have the right to work during the apprenticeship. You should not hold the same or higher qualification in the same pathway. Sponsorship is not available.
Additional Requirements
The apprenticeship is full-time, requiring 37.5 hours weekly. Applicants may already work bank shifts but must be willing to transition to a permanent role with 30-37.5 hours per week. The program includes diverse placements and academic learning, culminating in registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council upon successful completion.
Person Specification
Essential criteria include evidence of successful study at Level 5, GCSEs in Maths and English, at least 12 months' experience as a band 4 associate, UK residency for 3+ years, and alignment with trust values—caring, simple, integrity—supported by lived, caring, or volunteering experience.
