Applications are invited for the post of the Leicester Foot and Ankle Fellowship, for a period of 6-12 months.
The Leicester Foot and Ankle Fellowship is specifically designed for a senior trainee [post-FRCS (orth)] who has planned for a career in Foot and Ankle surgery. The fellowship is a multi-consultant fellowship. There will also be opportunities to be involved in trauma surgery.
This post does not attract an NTN and is aimed at speciality registrars who have neared completion of their training and want a fellowship experience in Foot and Ankle surgery.
The foot and ankle team at Leicester includes five fellowship-trained consultants, an extended scope practitioner, a Foot and Ankle specialist nurse, and two plaster technicians. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with most of the Foot and Ankle Consultants in the team, namely Mr. Alistair Best, Mr. Maneesh Bhatia, Professor Jitendra Mangwani, Miss Shilpa Jha, and Mr. Hytham Affifi.
The post holder will be part of a team providing a foot & ankle surgical service to the Leicestershire and Rutland community. There will also be opportunities to develop skills in elective as well as foot & ankle trauma surgery and diabetic foot care. It is expected that the post holder will be competent in straightforward common procedures involving the foot and ankle and in other basic lower limb surgery. The posts offer additional training in complex hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot reconstruction, including arthroscopic and arthroplasty procedures around the ankle.
Main duties of the job include:
1. Contributing to the provision of a comprehensive, high-quality foot and ankle service at the Trust.
2. Delivering clinical sessions in out-patients and theatres.
3. Taking a lead role in the department's current foot and ankle research portfolio.
4. Assisting in the teaching and training of junior surgical colleagues and allied health professionals.
The successful candidate will gain experience in most common foot and ankle conditions including assessment, investigation, diagnosis, hallux valgus surgery, lesser toe surgeries, fusions, ankle arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, total ankle replacement, Achilles tendon repair, debridement, and foot and ankle trauma.
Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for 2023-2030, with primary goals of high-quality care, being a great place to work, partnerships for impact, and research and education excellence, embedding health equality in all we do.
It is expected that there will be approximately two lists per week for training in complex surgery, with opportunities to attend lists delivered by other consultants. As the post-holder becomes more experienced, they will undertake independent operating through backfill sessions. They will undertake one independent clinic per week and one clinic with the mentoring consultant, seeing both new and follow-up patients under supervision.
The post holder will be responsible for daily patient care on the ward, working closely with a resident doctor, and managing their practice's administration. Additionally, two half days per week will be allocated for audit, research, and professional development under supervision. Limited weekend work, including participation in the weekend elective ward round rota (up to 1 in 10), will also be required.
